MAIL & MEETING 13th December, 2016. Being a CA, I am very much particular about my mails. So, on that cold morning, at 6 a.m. I got to hear a mail notification tone from my phone. Firstly,I was like, ”Who is there in the morning and why the hell mobile data is ON ? ” I peeped out from my blanket to find my phone. After a considerable half minute struggle, I finally had it in my hand. The mail was from Veronica Maheshwari. Before I think of reading it later, I saw the subject of the mail, ‘IMPORTANT’. Yes, in capital letters. I wasn't excited to read it. It's just that, if not for me, it was IMPORTANT for her. “Hello Prachi, I just want to tell you that I'm breathing last few days of my life. I have so many things to tell you & I want you to write my story. There's someone who should know the truth. I can't die without revealing the truth. I know this is so weird but I just want you to write my story & this is my last wish. Give me a reply as soon as possible.” I re-read it thrice. Then I replied her, seeking for her address & contact details. I started thinking of possibilities of her short life. Then I thought she might be an old age lady. At 8:12, I got her reply. There was an address of a well-known hospital in the city & her contact number. Dev, my husband was out of station for work and Aksh, my son was at my mom's place for vacation. I went to that hospital at 10 a.m. only. It was so strange. I never felt so nostalgic to anyone, not even to my CA books... Then, I entered her ward and I froze the moment my eyes caught her. Veronica was not an old age lady. She was barely 23. So young, so beautiful and so much adorable. No, she had not a fair complexion. She had a wheatish one but still she managed to look so gorgeous. She smiled as soon as I stopped seeing her. How can such a young girl die so early? How? And above all she was Veronica. Her smile could make a dead soul alive. “Prachi, please come inside and sit here.” She said very slowly. I arranged myself in a chair. “Hi Veronica. How are you?” I greeted her with a flower bouquet. “I am happy as you came.” She paused & then continued, “I want you to write my story. Will you ?” She asked me so innocently. “I will. Just tell me why are you hospitalised and what happened to you ?” I asked. “Prachi, I have a tumour in my brain. Though doctors can remove it, but the possibility of the operation being successful is just 5%. So basically 95%, I will die on the new year eve.” She smiled. I gave her a puzzled look. “Operation is scheduled on 31st December. And there is 5% chance of my survival.” She elaborated. “Veronica, it's ok. We have enough time. I want you to tell me everything. I promise I will write your story & fulfil your last wish.” I didn't know what I spoke but it was purely from my heart. I told her that I would come at night and she was fine with it. I reached to office. By the time, Dev was already there. “Prachi, I came to office directly.” He said. “Go to home and take rest my love.” I replied looking into files. “Prachi...” He called my name in a very firm tone. “Yeah Dev.” I put the files aside. “I called up at home. Maid said you have left so I called you but to my surprise your phone is switched off. So I came to office directly.” Finally he completed. “Sorry Dev. Actually I was in hospital so I switched off my phone.” I said. “What? I mean why? Are you alright?” He is too concerned about me and honestly speaking I enjoy this attention. “Relax. I am fine. I went there to meet someone.” I told him the entire story then. “Someone is so famous here.” He smirked. “Someone is so jealous here.” I snapped back. “Not at all. I love you and I am happy for that, so keep going. And yes, I'll join you there.” He said holding my hand. “Ok Mr. Thakor, now kindly go to your cabin & start working.” I smiled. “Madam please, kindly allow me to work in your cabin. My work efficiency will increase by 1000 %.” “Dev please go now. You won't leave a single chance to get romantic. It's our office & you are a father of 4 years old Aksh. Remember that at least.” I completed. “Prachi, I'll be romantic with you even when we're in mid of our 60s.” He hugged me and went out. That night we went to meet Veronica at 9 p.m. She smiled more happily on seeing Dev with me. “Prachi, This handsome is Dev. Right ?” She asked me. “Yes, my husband.” I replied with a smile. “Pleasure meeting you Dev.” “Pleasure meeting you Veronica. I hope you are ok if I'm the part of your story telling session.” He asked. She laughed. So much real and so much down to earth personality. “It's completely alright. I hope I won't disappoint you guys and I am not disturbing your office hours.” Damn, she was so modest. “Not at all Veronica. We'll daily come at this time for 2 hours to listen you. You are our priority.” I explained her with a gentle voice. She was smiling constantly.
