The cries from the crib woke me around 2am. The baby monitor had long been set up since we moved David into his own room. I went in to check on him, to see if he simply could not sleep, or if he needed a bottle.

I picked him up and rocked him in his chair for a while, and he went back to sleep. I then went back and slept a while myself.

Some time later he woke me, crying again. I again rocked him back to sleep. I then returned to my own bed. I found it strange that my wife had not woken up once, was she sleeping so soundly she could not hear him? This was very strange.

A little while later he started crying again. I was tired and needed my rest so I shook my wife awake. " Honey, would you go check on David? He keeps waking up and I have checked on him twice already." She stirred up and turned to look at me with tears in her eyes. " That is not funny! How dare you wake me with a statement like that!" She had tears rolling down her face now.

All I had wanted her to do was check on David her own son. It then occurred to me that she never checks on him when he cries. " Why am I the only one who seems to answer his cries at night?" I asked. She then got out of bed and walked into David's room. She asked me to come there. I pulled myself out of bed and walked into David's room.

I then realized the crying had stopped. My wife was sobbing uncontrollably now as she held David's teddy. " He might miss teddy, best to put it back in the crib." I took the teddy from my wife and began to put it back in the crib when I noticed. The Crib was empty. In fact it looked like it never had been used.
