What personal characteristics must a person possess before they meet the qualifications of "friend" to anyone:

1. Trustworthy; able and willing to keep your secrets but not your things/money.

2. Balanced give and take ratio. When you need them, they are there as you would be for them.

3. Never gossips about you. It is important to them to make you look good.

So, if someone doesn't show all three of these FIRST, do not date them, lend them money, let them crash on your couch; I wouldn't even let them walk your dog.
