You left me with one lesson
And, damn, I learned it well
Don't let the ones that hurt you
Ever know they've caused you hell
never at all.
If you taught me just one lesson
It's to hold my heart down deep
Where no one ever sees it
As though it's fast asleep
So when it shatters, it's in silence
Like sharpened steel
Cutting me from skin to soul
But they'll not know how I feel
For that alone, I thank you
I learned it oh, so well
I show the world my heaven
While my heart bleeds straight to hell
It's made me so much stronger
It gave me higher ground
I pour it out in poetry
And they never hear a sound.
