Chapter one: Seeing is believing “Sweetheart, I'm telling you, there is no such thing as fairies.” Samantha's mother said. “Mom, I know they are real!” Samantha replied with a frown. “Have you ever seen one?” Her mother asked. “No, but-” Samantha was cut off by her Mom. “Then they're not real. Now, go do your homework.” Her Mother said sternly. “Whatever Mom..” Samantha stomped up the stairs, into her room. Samantha pulled out her paper and colored pencils and started drawing. The woods in back of her home was her inspiration. Samantha saw the fairies a lot, but her Mom thought it was an imagination, or a phase. It frustrated Samantha that no one saw what she saw. Samantha started drawing the mysterious, dark wood outside her home. She started with the trees, the animals, and the flowers. Then, the things that no one else could see. First, Samantha drew the outline of the castle that sat beyond the woods. Then, the fairies and mystical animals that roamed the trees. Samantha opened the window to get a better view. Wind blew her curly brown hair into her dark blue eyes. “Dinner time, Sam!” Samantha's father called. “OK!” Samantha shouted back. Samantha took one last look outside before shutting the window closed, and sprinting down the stairs. “Hey, pumpkin!” Samantha's father pulled her into a hug. “Hi Dad.” Samantha replied, pulling away from his bear hug. Samantha walked into the kitchen to grab her plate. As she looked for a clean plate in the cabinets, something twinkling in the window caught her eye. At first glance, Samantha thought she was seeing things. But after a couple seconds, something was hovering in front of the window. Samantha dropped her plate, and gasped. “MOM, DAD, ITS-ITS A FAIRY!!” Samantha yelled with glee. “SAMANTHA! THAT IS NO EXCUSE TO DROP YOUR PLATE ON THE FLOOR! ” Her mother scolded. “Sam, we talked about this. Fairies are not real.” Samantha's father said. “No, Dad! I saw it!!” Samantha insisted that she saw a fairy. “Young lady, come help me pick up the glass.” Her mother says, handing her a broom. Shattered glass was scattered across the tiled floor. “But Mom, I saw a fairy..up close!” Samantha fought. Her mother gave her the death stare. Samantha knew that if she did not clean the plate she dropped, her mom would send her to bed without dinner. Samantha started to sweep the broken glass into the pan. After a few minutes of sweeping, no more glass could be seen on the floor. “Done!” Samantha pulled the broom into the closet. “Hun, come here. We uh, need to talk.” Her mother eyes showed concern. 'Great, another talk about how an eleven year old shouldn't believe in magic.' Samantha thought. Samantha sat down into the small chair beside her Mom. “Sam..you need to stop with all this "fairy" nonsense. We all know that magic people and animals don't exist.” Her father spoke with a bit of anger. “Please, just listen. I-” Samantha was again, interrupted by her Mother. “No. You need to-” Ellen, Samantha's mother was cut off by Samantha. “NO! YOU need to listen to your daughter. So, as I was saying, what was that I saw then? I'm not mentally crazy!!” Samantha replied, exasperated. Samantha's mother just shook her head and walked out of the room. “Hun, wait.” Samantha's father, Dan, followed Ellen out of the room. Samantha sighed, and went back up to her room. She flopped on her bed. 'I'm not crazy..am I..?'
