Sarah thought history class was boring. She knew about "That guy" who discovered the new world, and she knew that history was boring. Sarah sat next to May and Tyler on the third bench up. Other first year teams sat in random spots in the seating area. Kyles team sat just a few feet away from Sarah on the next bench up. Professor Alpine stood at the front of the class, dramatically reciting the voyage of the famous explorer. His emerald eyes twinkled through his glasses as he thrusted his arms this way and that, his silver hair flailing to keep up with the well dressed man. "And THAT, students, is how the intrepid explorer discovered the new world!" As he finished, professor Alpine made a heroic victory pose. "Now, before the bell ri..." Before Alpine could finish, the bell cut him off. "Oh, looks like I got carried away. Oh well, knowledge is always worth it. I will see you guys on Monday. Have a great weekend and remember, every situation you find yourself in is an opportunity to learn!" "Finally!" May said as they were walking outside for lunch. She looked like she just ran a mile. History wasn't a favorite of hers either. "How about we go get something off campus?" "That sounds like a great idea. To the pizza, team!" Sarah pointed out a building at the other side of the street. "I would but I can't. Sorry, I have to go somewhere else today." Tyler scratched the back of his head as he spoke, slowing down to a stop. "Aww, where?" Sarah gave Tyler the 'puppy dog' eyes. "Come on, we're supposed to team build. Nothing like team building over food!" May patted her belly, enjoying the thought of pizza. "Sorry, I'm already late. I'll catch up with you two before next class." With that, Tyler turned and walked to the other end of the campus. "Well, I guess it's just the two of us again." Sarah said looking down in defeat. "Forget about him, we'll have a girl's... Uh... Lunch out? Whatever, let's just go get pizza!" the thought of eating pizza driving her towards the pizza place. "Yay pizza!" Sarah followed her teammate to the pizza place on the other side of the road. They entered the pizza place and a warm, pleasing wave of smells hit them. The place was small but cozy. The main bulk of the area was the counter where a short, black haired man in red with a big bushy moustache that curved up words was waiting. "Welcome to Harley-O's. May I take-a your order?" He spoke with an accent Sarah never heard before except for the few times she came here. "One large double pepperoni and cheese pizza with anchovies on one half and green peppers on the other please!" The peppers were for Sarah, the anchovies for her teammate. "Coming right-a up!" The man went to the back room. "I never get tired of the way he talks." May was silently giggling. "I know right!" Sarah joined in. They went to a table by the window and sat down. "So, can I ask you something?" May suddenly looked more serious now. "Sure May, what's up?" "Why did you come to Grim's Academy? Sarah looked at the girl, her golden eyes staring back at her in anticipation. When Sarah didn't answered, May continued. "I mean, I heard about what happened. Everyone heard what happened, but why did you choose to come? As far as I know, you weren't expected to become a Shade Slayer." "Well... I never got to meet anyone my age out in the wild lands... Actually, never got to meet much of anyone for that matter." "But if you just wanted to meet people, why not just move to the city?" May looked more confused then satisfied with the answer. "Normal people? Are you crazy? I wanted to meet people who like action. I want to save lives." Sarah paused for a moment. "I've seen what happens when there isn't a Shade Slayer around, I don't want to see that again." Sarah shrunk in her chair, feeling much smaller than a minute ago. "I see. I'm sorry." They waited for their food in silence. Writer's notes; the character building is hopefully strong in this one? Yes? No? Feedback? Rate honestly and criticize productively. 😄
