Chapter Nine

It had been three days since Danny took off and we were all starting to get a little worried about him. It was one thing when he disappeared for days back home, but we were in a new city. We tried to keep ourselves busy sightseeing in LA, but it just didn't feel the same without Danny, and Sam was coming and going with Thibaut.

Last night at campfire Kevin pulled out his guitar and played a little while the rest of us shared a joint. Sam was with Thibaut and she never came home, that was a first. Thibaut typically would bring her back either before or a little after dinner, and sometimes stay for a drink. Since he had been sleeping in his bus, we just assumed Sam slept with him last night.

It was already late afternoon on the fourth day since Danny left. We just walked back to camp from being down at the beach. Kevin, Evol and Mac were a bit on edge and needed a change of scenery. They planned to grab their gear and head out to go shoot. When we got back to the RV we could hear the shower and wondered if Danny or Sam returned.

We all sat around waiting to see who appeared out of the bathroom. We heard muffled voices and couldn't quite tell what was going on. We thought that maybe Sam came back with Thibaut and were in the shower together. It would be weird and out of character for Danny to have brought anyone back.

It felt like forever before the door opened and we saw Sam and Danny standing in towels. They both had a giddy look about them as they stood there together looking at us. We did not expect to see that at all. Especially since they argued the night he left.

We all were silent as our expressions begged for some explanation. Sam started first as she told us that Thibaut dropped her off pretty late last night and she decided to sit outside and smoke a joint before coming in. Then Danny showed up and said he needed help with something he had been working on. So she took off with him.

Danny looked much better than he did a few nights ago. He eventually spoke up and said he had a surprise for us. We were intrigued because he and Sam seemed both really excited as they dressed.

Kevin was hoping that Danny had stayed clean while he was gone these past few days and he still was a little worried about him. Danny would get easily agitated and you could tell he was feigning for a high. Which is what he seemed to be building up to right before he took off. However he has now returned happier and with a bit more excitement about anything in awhile.

Kevin wasn't the only one concerned about him. The rest of us agreed that it was possible that Danny had found a dealer while he was out wherever he was, his behavior seemed as though he just got a fix. We all thought it best to not say anything until we saw what this surprise was all about.

                                                       Chapter Ten

We arrived at an old warehouse somewhere downtown. The entire area seemed to be run down and empty. There were windows that had been busted out around the building which added to the charm of the place. Danny told us to bring our cameras, and I'm glad we did. It felt good to be out shooting together again.

We still weren't sure what Danny had in mind as a surprise for us other than maybe some steel wool photography or some cool light painting. He asked Kevin to bring his creepy pig mask, so it had to be something worth while.

As we walked around the back of the building we found a door that was chained closed, but the give was pretty generous because we all fit through it fairly easy. It was dark and dirty inside. There was a pretty strong smell of urine as we walked further inside. I'm assuming that this was a popular place for homeless people to stay when it was cold or wet out.

We came up to a door and Danny stood there holding the doorknob while looking back at us like he was about to reveal a hidden treasure. Sam stood there with a big smile as if she couldn't wait for us to see our surprise. By now I was getting pretty excited as well.

He opened the door and let us all inside. The room was dark and I was waiting for my eyes to adjust. Danny turned on his flashlight and pointed at something hanging from ropes. It was a woman, a naked women. She had both arms spread and each arm was tied to hooks that hung from the rafters above.

She had a stool under her feet, just high enough to where she could balance on her tiptoes to relieve some of the pressure off of her arms. She had blonde stringy hair and her eyes looked tired and defeated. She had a gag in her mouth which Danny quickly removed.

Sam kept looking at Danny and then us trying get a read on what we were thinking. Mac and Evol slowly walked around her checking her out from all angles. Alex and I just stared in amazement. We could not believe what we were seeing. Did Danny do this just for us? Who was this girl? A million questions were running through my mind when Danny started to talk.

Danny told us how he felt like he was looking for a fix and wandered around LA. He ran into some guys on the corner asking where he could get hooked up with some product. That is what led him down to Pico Blvd. A well known spot to get whatever you were looking for in terms of getting high.

While wandering around he met Shanda. Shanda had been down there looking to buy some heroin, she actually approached Danny and that is when it hit him. He wasn't looking for any drug, he had been itching for another photo shoot.

He talked with Shanda a bit before he said he knew a place where they could both get their fix. She was agreeable as most desperate feigns were. Apparently she had got caught up with the wrong crowd while out here for school. She had convinced herself that if she could just get one more hit that she would quit and go back to school. It had already been two years since she dropped out from UCLA.

I could tell that she used to be beautiful, and now she was just a sad statistic. What a wonderful find, these photos would definitely tell a meaningful story. I could tell that everyone else was on the same page. The light that had been missing was there again and we were ready to get started.

Shanda was shaking and seemed to be going through withdrawals. Danny opened his backpack and pulled out a whip. He asked to borrow the pig mask from Kevin and told us all to get our cameras ready.

As Danny wore the mask he whipped Shanda across her abdomen and she screamed out as she shook violently. The welts appeared instantly as we started taking pictures. She was too incoherent to know exactly what was going on when Danny hit her again. This time it hit her legs and she kicked so violently that she knocked the chair out of the way and now all of her weight was being held up by the ropes. Her eyes opened wide for the first time and we started firing the shutter off.

Kevin asked Danny if he could have a turn and Danny happily handed him the mask and the whip and then got his camera setup. Kevin stood up on the chair next to her in that mask and stared directly into her eyes. Shanda started crying and began shaking her head no. The emotions that came from her eyes were amazing to photograph. If she saw the photos, she would understand that what we were doing was was important. It was art and she would live forever through our work.

He whipped her a couple more times then Sam had asked if she could try. Sam took off all of her clothes and put the mask on. She didn't grab the whip, instead she stood next to Shanda naked and reached up to hold her hand that was tied up. Then Sam just stood there still while we took the pictures. The difference between their naked bodies told a story of sickness and health. Shanda was thin, her body covered in sores. Her skin was pale and you could see the dark blue of her veins. Her track marks were clearly visible on her arms as she hung there. Once upon a time I am sure she was beautiful, but the drugs were slowly killing her. It was up to us to put her out of her misery as we documented the entire thing.
