 I Really Tried To Be

I tried to be that is all we can do you see
I have failed many tests in trying to become the best
I worked hard trained even harder but I lost years wasted and at what cost
Ever since we first met, I have never failed you yet
I was always there for you I was stuck on you like glue
All those years together we spent going to school you never paid me much attention my friends thought I was a fool
I really tried to be that is all we can do you see
I was always there to help when you were in a bind to ensure you were going to be fine
I poured out my love to you several times throughout the years but it went in one out the other as if you could not hear
 In the end you made me turn blue on graduation day when we were loading up, I felt a hand on my shoulder then a voice that said sorry Joe I don’t love you
But I have always loved you in my mind there was no mistake that I loved you I was certain I cried then I tried to drown myself in the lake
I really tried to be That is all we can do you see
I stayed nearby and if you ever needed help of any kind I was there to ensure that you would be fine
Years flew by one then two then nine but I continued to watch from the sideline
I really tried to be that is all we can do you see
I once gave you my most precious gift I gave you a key it was to unlock my heart you see
But without a thought you tossed it away and since then I have not yet been able to come out to play
I really tried to be That’s all we can do you see
You’re a bird that loved to fly you had to be free to feel the wind on your wings as you soared into the sky
Your spirit could never have been tamed by locking you in a cage for one person to admire like on a one-man stage
 So be free my little yellow canary go fly feel the wind as it fills your wings as you soar into the baby blue sky
