Chapter Four Kevin had been driving for a few hours when we stopped for gas and snacks. It was so windy outside which made it colder than it actually was. We were still in Arizona and headed to LA, we had a long drive ahead of us so they took turns behind the wheel. Alex decided to take the next shift and I sat up front with her so I could write in my journal. Kevin took to his bunk and immediately began snoring. Mac sat with the glow of his laptop illuminating his face as he obsessively edited his photos. Evol sat back in a chair and looked to be writing a letter. I think this was a habit he developed in prison. I'm not quite sure who he wrote to, but he wrote often but never mailed anything. Sam and Danny both slept through the stop for gas and continued to sleep as we hit the road again. It was so dark out here on these desert roads which made staying awake challenging for Alex. Every now and then I would hand Alex a snack to keep her awake on the drive. We had been on many road trips in our time together and we had a system. I didn't drive much because I was easily distracted and would often scare her, so I sat shotgun and was in charge of music as well as snacks. I was happy to be headed to LA, it had been years since I last visited. I was looking forward to those twinkling city lights. It was always my favorite part of the city, and now I couldn't wait to take night shots from the Hollywood Hills. Alex had never been and I was anxious to show her my favorite spots, and the warmer weather would definitely be welcome. Sam and Danny were stirring in the back when Alex decided to stop for food. None of us had much to eat, aside from a few snacks early on in our drive. Alex was hungry and needed a change of environment. So she pulled into the parking lot of a 24 hour diner. Kevin had been out cold, Mac reached up and banged underneath his bunk to wake him. Kevin jumped up fast and hit his head on the ceiling. We all laughed as he rolled off his bed. Mac playfully rubbed his head to tease him. Thankfully Kevin had a sense of humor and was used to the guys teasing. We were seated in a large booth in the back of the restaurant. One table over was a man sitting alone looking at the menu. The smell of old coffee and bacon hit my nose and my stomach called out, letting me know that it was time to feed it. We ordered waters as we were given menus. Everything looked so good, it always did when I was starving. We sat quietly as we each took a moment to decide on what we wanted. We were all ready to order as the waitress returned with our waters. She was an older woman with red hair pulled up into a perfect bun. She wore a horrible shade of coral lipstick that seemed to have gotten on her teeth. Her voice was deep and raspy like she had been smoking her entire life. “Gertie” was written on her name tag. She was not an overly friendly woman, very matter of fact, like she was here to do a job, nothing more, nothing less. I can appreciate that as long as our order came correctly. We all sat quietly as we gobbled our food as if we hadn't eaten in a week. Not only were we too tired to make conversation, but I know that everyone was thinking about what was next. Once we get to LA there are so many things we planned to shoot, however things had changed. Nighttime cityscapes just didn't cut it for us anymore. We had a thirst for something darker and it's what kept us silent as we finished eating. Sam offered to drive the rest of the way to LA. We only had a couple more hours so it should be an easy drive, Mac sat shot gun to keep her company. Alex and I hadn't slept much so we decided to get some rest. Whether I would sleep or not is unknown. I had my journal with me to keep me company while Alex slept, from all the driving she was exhausted and passed out once she hit the pillow. Kevin, Evol and Danny played a game of poker at the table, a little quieter than they normally were, tonight I appreciated that. It was an uneventful trip so far. The next town we passed was Barstow, this time we just drove right on through. We passed the motel and I thought of Dee Dee. I wondered if Sam thought about that night as she was driving. I thought that was it for Sam after that night, the way she panicked after what happened, after her original melt down, she realized the beauty and power of the situation. What an amazing experience she gave us all and we would always be thankful for that. I know Dee Dee knows how special she is, or was, to us. I really don't know how Alex slept as the game of poker grew louder between the guys. Danny was always cracking jokes or just saying the most random things. Most of the time I laughed, however other times I was just confused. I often accused Danny of speaking in riddles. Or maybe it was just me who couldn't keep up with his twisted sense of humor. Either way, I loved Danny. He could be very intense but to me he was the glue to our group. When Danny wasn't around for whatever reason, things felt off. We needed him, and I'd like to think that he needed us as well. Danny, like Sam, grew up fast. He was on the streets selling dope and getting high by the time he was twelve. He had been in and out of jail on minor charges over the years, and was well known on the streets. At a young age he had seen more than his share of violence. When he was nineteen he met a girl, she was attending the local college as a photography student. He was in love with her and wanted to be the best he could be for her, and it was around that time he decided to get clean. He attended regular AA meetings and started to turn his life around. Danny and Sarah would spend the weekends traveling around and taking pictures. She taught Danny all about photography, and it became a passion for him, from what I saw he had a natural eye and impeccable work compared to Sarah. I don't really know what happened to her, but Danny pursued his new passion and earned a living taking photojournalism shots for the local paper. He was well known and respected in his field. Even though it was Sarah that led him down this path, he never mentioned where she went or what happened between them. He would just shrug his shoulders and changed the subject whenever it came up. We eventually learned to let it go. We were all beginning to get cabin fever as we pulled into LA. This city at night was always twinkling with glowing lights everywhere, it was like Christmas all year long. There always seemed to be things happening at all hours here. I liked that about LA, it didn't matter what time of day you were awake, you never felt lonely because someone somewhere was awake as well. Thankfully, we found a decent RV park right on the beach near Santa Monica. After being in the desert we could all use a little ocean breeze. Once parked, we all got out to stretch our legs. It was dark out, there were a few other RV’s parked nearby one of which had a campfire going. There was another spot a few spaces away from us that just had a car parked there. We didn't see remnants of a campfire or any tents up, maybe someone just needed a place to crash for the night and they slept in their car Mostly though, it was pretty quiet as we settled in. Sam and Kevin ran off into the dark headed toward the water. Danny sat on the short brick wall that separated the campground from the beach. He seemed to be taking it all in as he smoked his cigarette. Alex, Mac, Evol and I stayed back to set up camp. It was a little chilly out with the breeze and we were ready for a camp fire. Mac sat down as soon as we had the chairs set up and poured himself a glass of whisky. As he sipped his glass Evol grabbed the firewood we had kept in the outside storage of the RV and handed it to Alex. She stacked it perfectly in the pit to get the fire going instantly, she was always good at starting fires. I decided to wander off in The direction of Sam and Kevin. I took my blanket and journal with me so I could steal a few minutes alone writing as the waves gently crashed in and out. It felt good to be at the beach after being in the desert. It was such a different, faster way of life closer to the water. I really don’t know why that is, it just is. As I got closer, I could hear Sam's moans and Kevin’s grunting. I walked until I was able to see them up on the lifeguard tower. It was a clear night, and the stars that we got used to in the desert hid from sight in the city. So close to the beach it seemed so much darker at night. They probably wouldn't care if it was bright as day, they would still be up in that tower making the same noises. I sat down in the sand and watched them, Sam was bent over the railing while Kevin had her from behind. His hands were gripped tightly on her hips as he violently thrusted into her. I could hear the clapping of their bodies, it's as if they were on the same rhythm of the waves. They were unaware that I was watching, wouldn't really matter if they did, we didn't hide anything from each other and this is why we worked. When they finished I saw Sam run naked into the water. She let out a little scream as the shock of the cold water hit her skin, the shape of her body was illuminated by the moonlight, she was stunning as she splashed about naked in the waves. Kevin came down to sit next to me when he saw the little light I was using to write in my journal. We both sat watching Sam, and she loved it. Her perfect naked body all wet now, she had to be freezing, but Sam didn't care as long as she got to swim in the ocean. Eventually she got cold and ran up to where we were sitting to warm up. She effortlessly climbed into my blanket with me, I could feel her cold wet body as she shivered next to me. I have never had a sexual relationship with Sam, but the way her wet breast rubbed against my arm I couldn't help but to lean in and kiss her. It felt right for the moment and Kevin just sat back and watched. I rolled her around on her back as I caressed her nipple with my tongue. I licked her wet body that still tasted of salt from the ocean. As I reached the sweet spot between her legs, I devoured her, I finally knew what the fuss was all about. She grabbed a fistful of my hair as she moaned in pleasure. I felt her body jerk as she screamed out again, louder this time. She came and I delightfully took my lips soaked in her juices, and placed it on her mouth ever so gently. I teased her with my tongue as I licked her bottom lip. That drove her crazy and she grabbed my face and pulled me in closer and she shoved her tongue inside my mouth and we just kissed for a while as Kevin layed next to us. Sam finally warmed up as she went and grabbed her clothes and we headed back to camp. As we walked up from the beach we could see the glow from the fire where Alex, Mac, and Evol sat. As soon as we reached camp Sam immediately asked where Danny was. Evol pointed and said he took off that way. Sam hesitated for a moment, then asked if I wanted to go with her to look for him. We were beginning to give up and head back when we heard voices, one of them was familiar. We followed their voices and found Danny behind the bathrooms talking with a tall dark haired man with a beard and a pompadour. He had a camera hanging from his neck while he held a tripod in his other hand. As we walked up we caught the tail end of their conversation,it seems they had been talking about photography. The tall guy had an accent that I couldn't quite place. Danny smiled as he saw us approach. “Hey guys, this is Thibaut, Thibaut, these are my friends I was telling you about”. I smiled as I put my hand out to shake his. He smiled back and said “Hello, Como sava?” Sam jumped in. “Cajun?” Her eyes lit up. The conversation between them started and went on for a while. Something just clicked with them. Apparently Sam had a good friend from Louisiana and she was very familiar with the accent. Sam was immediately smitten with him, and he seemed equally impressed with her. We all talked effortlessly for a while then decided to invite him back to camp. As we walked up Kevin had his guitar out playing it softly as to not disturb our neighbors, when he saw Thibaut he immediately stopped playing. Mac had turned to see what everyone was looking at. Danny introduced him to everyone and Evol got up to grab him a chair and we all made him feel at home. The photography community was cool like that, we all seemed to flock together. Mac poured Thibaut a drink and then we learned more about him. Apparently he had been traveling solo and living out of his car. He had inherited some money and decided to see the world while he was still young. He said along the way he started taking pictures with his phone, then broke down and bought a real camera. He said he was still learning and would appreciate any tips we can offer. It's amazing how life works, how something as simple as photography can bring people together. I was thankful for the friendships that have formed after picking up my camera. In fact we all were, so it was natural for us to just welcome him in. Evol took that as his cue and stood up and announced that he wanted to go play with lights on the beach. Thibaut was a little confused until Sam assured him that it was fun and he should join. We all grabbed our gear and headed down by the water. This was to be his first lesson in long exposure photography where we painted with lights. Evol pulled out what looked like a glow stick attached to a rope, we all set our cameras on our tripods with a 20 second exposure and Evol started spinning the light, as our cameras clicked we all looked at our screen to see our shots. Thibaut was amazed, he had never seen anything like that before. He wanted to try spinning the light this time. This went on for a while, we were having fun but we had been up all night, the sun was beginning to come up. Of course we stayed to catch the sunrise then we all headed back to crash. We exchanged numbers with Thibaut and said goodnight.
