Masked Smiles Read Count : 109

Walking through the mall yesterday without really seeing anyone's face was such a trippy experience.
Who is behind those masks?

All those faceless humans, moving along the unusually quiet building, all with hopes and dreams just like me.

They are someone's son or daughter.
They are someone's friend or lover.

They are someone.

It is my sincerest hope that we are all developing an appreciation for the subtleties of human connection that we used to take for granted. I also hope it fuels a deep desire to actually know and feel the people we interact with everyday.

I told the young guy at the pet store, "I want you to know that I'm smiling at you," when he attended to me.

I wondered if he already knew that.
If he could feel it.

I wonder if me telling him had even half the impact of an actual smile.

I hope that it made him smile back at me. Tough to tell behind the masks.

It made me think about all the fake smiles, pretend pleasantries I've given and received. I wonder if there will be less of them now.

To be honest, I really don't know.
What I know is that I'm excited to see smiles again.

Real ones with dimples and creased eyes.
Gap-toothed grins and mischievous smirks.

I am excited to see your smiles again.

Until then, know that I'm smiling at you.

Even if it's from behind a mask.
