The beauty of Sadaqa in the month of Ramadan

Sadaqa (charities) are sincere offerings given by individuals as proof of their obedience to Allah s.w.t. Performing an act of charity is not forced but instead is born from the heart of the giver in accordance to their own capability.

The meaning of charity in Islam is immense. Sadaqa is not only bound to materialistic forms, but also through actions, sharing of knowledge, through smiles, dzikir and many more.

Ramadan is the month of blessing because Allah promised us, His servants, that one of the doors of heaven will be opened hence multiplying our deeds and sadaqa during this period.

There are numerous benefits of sadaqa in the month of Ramadan. These include;

1 – Our Deeds are Multiplied

Even though charitable acts can be done anytime, but unlike any other month, all good practices performed in the month of Ramadan, the rewards will be doubled.

“The likeness of those who performed sadaqa in the way of Allah, is similar to (the one who plants) a single seed that grows into seven strands and each one has a hundred grains and Allah multiplies (retribution) to those who desire, and Allah is Abundance (His grace) and All-knowing. ”

Surah al-Baqarah: 261

2 – Sadaqa Cleanse our Sins

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ  said which translated as:

“Charity can cleanse away sins as the water quenches the fire”

Hadith from at-Tirmidzi

The month of Ramadan is the best month for us to reflect on ourselves, strive to be better and to seek forgiveness from Allah for our past sins.

3 – To Separate us from Hell and Eradicating the Heat from the Grave

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ  said: “Perform sadaqa, for sadaqa is indeed separates us from hell.”

For Allah! You actually asked me something great. Indeed it is easy for anyone whom Allah has made easy for him. Worship God without associating anything with Him, offering prayers, performing alms, fasting in the month of Ramadan and performing pilgrimages in the House. Then He said: Do you not want me to show you the gates of goodness? Fasting is a shield. Charity extinguishes sin just as water quenches fire.

Riwayat al-Tirmizi (2616), al-Nasa’ie in al-Sunan al-Kubra (11394) and al-Tabarani dalam al-Mu’jam al-Kabir (103)

Performing sadaqa even in a small quantity can help take us further away from the hellfire.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ  again said;

“Keep yourself out of the fire of hell even with (sadaqa) a single date.”

4 – Obtain Relief in the Hereafter

Those who love to perform sadaqa are those who will obtain the protection of Allah in the hereafter. However, it must be performed with sincere intentions and not publicize their charity for the purpose of showing off or what is called riak. Therefore, sadaqa should be done in secret, sufficient enough for Allah to know.

“Whoever relieves a believer of a tribulation from the tribulations of the world, Allah Almighty will relieve it of a tribulation from the tribulation on the Day of Judgment. Whoever makes it easy for those who are in trouble, Allah will make it easy for him in this world and in the hereafter. Whoever that covers (the aurah or humility) of a Muslim, Allah will cover their (aurah or humility) in this world and the hereafter. Allah always helps a servant for as long as he helps others.
