Kevin drove while I did Sam's make up. The drive wasn't long coming from the diner so I wasn't nearly finished by the time we parked. We had no idea where we were headed and had no real expectations. As soon as we arrived, we realized that we had found a local tourist attraction, Calico Ghost Town. It wasn't too busy on Tuesday afternoon so it was perfect for us to have the place to ourselves to explore. I quickly finished with Sam as the others unloaded the gear. Her hair was so long and thick it took me a bit longer than I expected, but she was all done and looking gorgeous. As we wandered around, we decided to have Sam lean against an old post with one leg lying across the short railing on one of the older two story buildings while we shot from the lower level. The afternoon light with the white clouds in the sky lit Sam's face beautifully. She wore a white flowy sundress with no bra, her breasts were full and perky, and she filled it well. The white looked stunning against her tan skin and her dark hair was wavy and messy in the wind. Sam was experienced in front of the camera and knew how to use the breeze to her benefit. She pulled her dress up high to show her long, lean legs, and even though she was barefoot, she still towered over the old railings. A hundred years ago people were shorter, so they didn't have to build the railings too tall, but Sam made it work for her. She propped up one leg on it while she stood. She put her elbow on her knee and bent slightly forward so we could peek just inside her dress, revealing a bit of nipple. I immediately noticed Alex watching Sam. She stopped taking pictures for a minute and looked at Sam hungrily. This excited me. It had always been something that turned me on early in our relationship. Alex loved me and I have never had any doubts. Thinking about Alex having sex with a hot woman never made me jealous. In fact, it was just the opposite. It turned me on so much, and I knew it excited her to know I was watching. I felt that it made us closer. It's not something most people would understand, which is why we led such secret lives when the kids were young. After a short set on the balcony we moved to a little house that had a small porch with an old wooden rocking chair. The house was charming yet tattered. The paint was peeling off the wood that was used to build the house over 100 years ago. Danny was taller than Sam and fairly good looking with his dark scruffy hair and deep-set hazel eyes. His lips were full and his smile, although not perfect, gave him character. Sometimes we used him in front of the camera with her as they worked well together. If it was up to him, he'd settle down and have Sam all to himself, but he knew that she didn't operate that way. Sam wasn't someone you “settled down” with. Sam went up, sat in the chair and unbuttoned the front of her dress. Danny stood behind the chair, reached down and slid his hand over her shoulder and into the opening of her dress. He pulled out one of her bare breasts, revealing her perfect nipple. He tweaked it a bit and she laughed, making it so I was able to capture her natural smile. She was so beautiful when she laughed. He positioned his hand cupped under her breast as she reached up with her arm and grabbed him around his neck. As she looked up, they locked eyes and she slowly pulled him in for a kiss. “Hold it!” yelled Mac as we all snapped away. After a couple of hours of wandering around and shooting, we loaded up and decided to head back to the diner. On the way back we all talked about doing a set with Dee Dee. Driving past an old run down motel gave us an idea and we wondered if she would be willing. Although we loved taking pictures of Sam, it was sometimes nice to play with a fresh face. As we walked into the diner for the second time that day, Dee Dee headed right over, a little excited but with a questioning look on her face. Mac spoke up and thanked her for her idea on the location and let her know that we had fun and got some good shots. However we did want to eat before we headed out again. We were just finishing up by the time things quieted down enough for Dee Dee to come over and say hi. She was the only one working the floor and for a while things got pretty busy. Mac had done most of the talking with her. He was great at making people feel comfortable, so it only made sense that he was the one to ask if she was down to model for us. He mentioned that we passed a cool little run down motel with an empty pool out front. Dee Dee smiled and nodded as she spouted off, “The Desert Palace Inn - Yeah, I know it.” Mac was excited that she knew the place and went on to ask her if she wanted to work with us. Without any hesitation, as if she was just waiting for us to ask, she said yes with a big smile on her face. She also mentioned that she may even be able to get us into one of the rooms. Dee Dee had two more tables to finish up with before she clocked out. We planned to meet her near the motel on a dark quiet street so as not to raise any suspicion. We didn't know what she meant by “get us in,” so we wanted to play it safe and park a little ways down from the motel. We weren't strangers to sneaking into places we didn’t belong and we knew how to stay off the radar. As we sat in the RV waiting for Dee Dee, we saw bright lights beaming through the back window that then quickly shut off. After hearing the slam of a car door, there was a soft knock at the door, followed by Dee Dee’s sweet voice, “It's me guys!” We invited her into our already crowded space. Mac of course offered her a drink as he was pouring one for himself. She politely accepted. As they both finished their drinks we chatted a bit to break the ice. We talked about getting some shots of her and Sam in the empty pool. While she was ok with that idea, she reminded us that she could probably get us into one of the rooms. There was a room that hadn't been renovated for some reason, so they never rented it to guests. She’d heard about it from some friends who snuck in to party one night. Apparently the back window wouldn't lock. Dee Dee said the place was already poorly run, so she assumed the lock was never fixed. We didn't have to say much. She knew by the looks on our faces that we were all in. Moments later we were all crawling through the window of one of the rooms in the back. The odor hit my nose instantly and I knew that this room hadn't been touched in years. It smelled musty like old cigarette smoke mixed with the scent of a heater that hadn’t been turned on in a while . Dee Dee flicked on the light switch and we saw roaches scatter for hiding spots. We all stood in silence as we roamed around the room in amazement. The carpet that looked like it was green back in its youth was black in most areas and was matted down on the main pathway to the bathroom. There was one full-size bed in the middle of the room with two matching wood veneer nightstands on either side. Both had gold lamps with orange lamp shades sitting upon them. The wallpaper was an atrocious orange and green floral print with specs of gold throughout. A lot of it had been peeling in spots, which made sense since it was so old. There was so much dust and dead flies collected on the surfaces of the furniture. Garbage was left on the floor, beer cans and empty bags of food sat on the desk in the corner. The air in the room was stale, a poor contrast with the fresh air that snuck in through the open window. Sam walked into the bathroom and called for us to come see. It was as if we just stepped out of a time machine as we walked through the door. It was a medium-sized bathroom containing an old green tub with a matching sink and toilet. The walls were covered in old silvery textured wallpaper. In some areas, spots were missing from the wall. The spout in the tub was rusted along with the little chain that held the rubber stopper. There was mold along the caulking of the bathtub that looked like it had been growing for years. Other than the dust build up, the inside of the tub looked like a great spot to shoot Dee Dee. I asked what everyone thought about doing a bathtub scene and told them of my plan. I liked the idea of messy smeared make up, like she was upset while she took her bath, telling a story only the viewer could relate to depending on their own personal experiences. To some, it could be a sad, heartbroken girl going through a bad break up. Or a girl who had been raped, washing off the filth of her attacker. I knew I wanted to leave it up to interpretation. We went back to the RV so I could work on Dee Dee’s makeup and get our gear. Her hair didn't need fixing so I worked on her face. After applying mascara and lipstick, I took a wet paper towel and smeared it to get the look I wanted. Meanwhile, Evol grabbed some towels to wipe down the tub a bit before Dee Dee got in. He was careful to make her feel comfortable. His behavior was so contradictory to his past. Evol had been a part of our group for some time now, but I was always on edge around him. Hearing that he was convicted of murder, and with a name like Evol, I had every right to be. However spending so many hours with these people, I’d developed a closeness with them. Evol opened up to us while driving. You see, when he was younger, he hung out with some bad people and he happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was wrongfully accused in the murder of a well- known businessman. Evol spent his time in prison fighting for his innocence, submitting appeal after appeal until he finally gave up. He eventually latched on to a group of spiritual men. It wasn’t a religious thing at all. It was different. They believed in forgiveness and rehabilitation of the broken mind. Before prison, even though he wasn't guilty of murder, he was guilty of other crimes. Some would even say that he was evil given the shit he had done. As he found himself more involved with this group of men, he began a spiritual growth. He gave himself a nickname, Evol_e. It was a play on words that had a special meaning to him. As time went on and he grew spiritually, he was learning to not just forgive himself, but his brothers that had turned on him and gotten him locked up for so long. The most difficult battle of forgiveness was getting past the fact that while he was in prison he lost his mother. He couldn't be there to help her and because of that he held himself accountable. Forgiving himself for that would be the hardest. Once he was able to forgive himself, he would no longer be known as Evol_e, he would finally Evolve. Until then the nickname was a daily reminder of his path to complete freedom. Learning this about him helped me to understand why he had a sensitive side, why he was so gentle with Sam and why he thoughtfully cleaned the bathtub for Dee Dee. As the tub filled, Dee Dee took off her clothes. She seemed very comfortable stripping down in front of all of us. She was thin, and had no real curves. She was so different from Sam. Her skin was pale, like that of a porcelain doll and it contrasted beautifully to her long dark hair. She tossed her clothes on to the bed, smiled sweetly and asked if we were ready. Her confidence was sexy. The bath wasn't full enough yet, so Mac asked DeeDee to stand in front of the sink and gaze into the mirror. We all took turns shooting her from different angles. I chose to focus on her reflection, leaving the backside of her blurred. The others all had their own ideas and perspectives with the shot. I loved that about photography. We could all capture the same scene and subject and yet have entirely different results. Dee Dee seemed to be a little nervous as we were all focused on her. Kevin thought adding a bit of music would loosen her up. He ran to the RV and grabbed his little plug in radio. He always claimed it was his lucky charm. It seemed to fit perfectly with the decor of the room as they were most likely from the same era. We often teased Kevin about it, but he didn't mind. He loved that little radio. Kevin returned and plugged it in and set it on the sink next to the tub. I don't know why he was so attached to it, all I ever heard was static from the speakers as the music played. Kevin claimed he loved it for the nostalgia, although I feel there was more to it than that. As the music played, Mac directed Dee Dee as we continued to shoot. He suggested that she count to three before moving to her next pose. She started to relax after that and we were able to get some good shots. She eventually climbed into the tub. Dee Dee laid back easily and Mac asked her to look our direction, but not at the camera. We wanted the sense of disconnect, as if she was alone in her misery. It worked as we fired away catching her subtle movements. She sunk a bit lower in the bath, the ends of her hair were now wet and floating in the water. Her nipples were slightly protruding from the water making for a beautiful scene. All of us were cramped in trying to get the best angle. I could hear the clicking of Evol’s shutter in my ear as he was pushed up against me. Dee Dee seemed more comfortable now as she moved around like a pro. We were in the moment firing away when we heard a splash, then the lights dimmed a bit. Suddenly an awful odor hit my nose as I heard Sam gasp “Oh my god, oh my god”. Everything happened so fast, the details are still a blur. Danny pulled Sam off of the sink and carried her out of the bathroom. I was trying to make sense of the situation as I looked up to Alex, she was standing there completely unaffected by it all. The soft shutter from Evol’s camera that had been pecking away in my ear slowly ceased. I caught his eye as he stood there confused. I looked over at Mac and Kevin who continued to capture Dee Dee in the water. I instinctively backed out of the bathroom confused by what was happening. I looked through my camera to try and figure out what happened. My hands were shaking as I scrolled through the images. I was full of shock and disbelief as I saw Dee Dee’s face. Her eyes were lit up nicely in one image, and in the next her eyes rolled back inside her head. Smoke seemed to be escaping through her pores. A white foam seeped through her nose and her clenched teeth. As I was processing what I was seeing, and trying not to vomit from the stench, the shutters slowed, then finally stopped. The brief silence that filled the room was strangely loud, or maybe it was the base of my heart pounding through my ears that was deafening. As I looked at the others for answers I could see that we were all in disbelief. I had to see with my own eyes as I pushed my way past Mac and Kevin. Dee Dee was now almost fully emerged in the water. Her body somehow shifted on its side with one arm reaching out as if begging for help. I froze. I was mesmerized by the scene. If it wasn't for the smell, I wouldn't believe it was real. Danny walked in to survey the scene, his nose twitched from the stench as he got closer. Mac and Kevin were glued to their cameras as they scrolled through the images. They seemed to feel the same perverse excitement as I as they shared the images they captured with Danny. They were proud of their shots and Danny was also pleased with what he had as well. Dee Dee was dead, and we were in awe. Once I came down from the initial rush I heard Sam sobbing and talking to herself from the other room. Evol shook his head and got his wits together and said very matter of fact, that we needed to make it look like a suicide then head out quickly. Without any hesitation Alex went into business mode and instinctively began wiping down surfaces that could possibly have our prints on them. I snapped at Alex, “It's a fucking hotel room, there are hundreds of prints in here!” She stopped what she doing and gave it some thought and then dropped the towel. “Guys, it already looks to be self inflicted, she looks like she was upset and crying. Let’s just go.” We all agreed. Leaving Kevin's lucky radio, we all hopped out of the window and headed back to the RV. Alex jumped into the driver’s seat while Mac grabbed his flask and sat shot gun. Kevin, Danny and Evol sat at the table in silence.
