                                   The Athysia policy

Scene 1: Castle

A worried girl rushes down the crimson castle hall, carrying a stack of crippled papers. As she pushes the large steel door open.

Julie:  King Kent! We have a serious problem!

King Kent: Julie dear? What seems to be the problem?

Julie: The Burton, Whitely, and Lupton kingdoms all demand payment within the next two weeks.

A concerned woman dressed in ivory silk comes in carrying a young child.

Queen Ellis: Julie? Are you serious? We don’t have that kind of gold on hand.

Julie: I’m afraid so Queen Ellis. They said pay up or there will bring us to war.

King Kent: A war? Julie lead with that next time please.

Queen Ellis: Kent honey what should we do?

King Kent: How much can we pay them Julie?

Julie: We only have an available fund of 20 grams of gold. Which according to the whitely kingdoms currency is only about $1,114 of the $18,000 we owe them. That doesn’t even consider the totals we owe the Burton and Lupton kingdoms.

Queen Ellis: Then I’ll sell my dress. It’s silk it can sell for a good bit of gold.

Julie: I’m afraid it won’t do much for the debt we have.

King Kent: Then what do you consider Julie? We trust your judgement with this one.

Julie: Unfortunately, trying to pay off the debt in two weeks probably won’t be feasible. We can try and come together with most of it, but we won’t be able to do it without some help.

Queen Ellis: Help? From who?

Julie: You two have heard of the Athysia Kingdom correct?

King Kent: Of course, they yanked the title for top kingdom from us this year. We held the top rank for over 15 years.

Julie: Actually, sir they were and are the superior kingdom. They have a higher population, more livestock, and better finances. Which is why they could be the best to help us.

Queen Ellis: How do you propose they help us anyway? We aren’t really in the good to borrow gold from anyone.

Julie: No of course not. We just need to have a conversation with the royals. They enacted a policy when they got here. They talked about it during the competition. If we get their approval to use it, then it may help.

King Kent: We can’t do much else so let’s get to riding.

Scene 2: Athysia Kingdom

Kent, Ellis, and Julie all hop on horses as they tread north. Passing through the mud and gravel. Voyaging through the forest, and riding through Birdwood borough. To arrive at the gates of The Athysia Palace.

Soldier: (Standing upon a stone gate) Halt! Who goes there?

Queen Ellis: Hello. I am Queen Ellis of the Dorwin Kingdom.

King Kent: I am King Kent of the Dorwin Kingdom.

Julie: I am Julie Taylor and I’m The Dorwin Kingdoms financial consultant.

Soldier: From which kingdom are you from Ms. Taylor?

Julie: I grew up in the Kasen Kingdom. I’ve been with the Dorwin Kingdom for 12 years sir.

Soldier: Okay. You’ve been cleared to enter.

Queen Ingrid: King Dorwin! Why is it great to see you. I hope you aren’t too sour about us taking your kingdoms title.

King Kent: I’m a little cross about it but nothing I can’t handle.

Queen Ingrid: Very good. Unfortunately, Brody Is away on business for the kingdom so he won’t be here to see you. I heard from your consultant though that you needed help.

King Kent: Yes, it appears we are having financial problems and Julie suggested we reach out to you.

Queen Ingrid: Well, I’m sure I can be of some assistance. What Is it you needed my help for?

Queen Ellis: I think Julie can explain It better than us.

Julie: Queen Ingrid. When your kingdom was at the Collective Kingdom competition you spoke of a policy you enacted. The Athysia policy?  I was wondering whether you could explain that to us.  We were in hopes of using it as well.

Queen Ingrid: Yes, the policy which Is called the fiscal policy by the way. Athysia policy is just something my dear son Harry came up with. The name was created by my dear father John K. I’d be ecstatic to explain it to you. The more kingdoms using the policy the better we’ll be.

Julie: Great. We really appreciate the help.

Queen Ingrid: No troubles at all. Let’s head to somewhere more comfortable.

They all walk down the halls to a gold embroidered room with satin silk cushions. Where the queen ushers them to take a seat. Which they each do apprehensively.

Queen Ingrid: Fiscal policy is used to help control royal spending and decrease or increase the tax on the people. It helps to control the economic output and stabilize business.

Queen Ingrid:  I take it by finance troubles you mean debt?

Julie: Yes, we owe three different kingdoms their share of payment from our shared union.

Queen Ingrid: How much collectively in cash not gold?

Julie: Roughly 55,000 dollars in total.

Queen Ingrid: Okay. Your kingdoms at a standstill so I think it may be best for the kingdom to use an expansionary fiscal policy.

King Kent: What’s that?

Queen Ingrid: An expansionary fiscal policy is one of the two parts of fiscal policy. It’s usually used when an economy is in a decline. While the other part contractionary is used during a peak.

Queen Ellis: What will we have to do to enact it?

Queen Ingrid: The expansionary policy is started by first cutting back taxes and increasing royal spending.

Julie: Increasing the royals spending?

Queen Ingrid. Yes. But on things that will improve the kingdoms general profits. Like repairs and shops. It will increase the demand amongst the people.

Julie: This will help us over time?

Queen Ingrid: Yes, and when your kingdom gets into a peak where business Is high. Then switch to contractionary policy. Where you’ll increase the tax on the people. While also decrease the royals spending. This will counteract inflation and decrease demand.

King Kent: What about limits or shortcomings of your policy?

Queen Ingrid: Yes, there is at least one possible downfall to either part of the policy. With expansionary it could cause possible inflation. With contractionary it could cause an increase in unemployment.

Queen Ellis: Hmm, we have a lot to consider. Julie, what’s your opinions?

Julie: I think it’s a great long-term solution for you troubles. I just don’t know how much it will help with our little time.

King Kent: Julie’s right. I think using the policy will be a great move. I just don’t see how much improvement it will do now.

Queen Ingrid: All you can do now is try. See how it goes and try and make peace with any kingdoms you owe.

Queen Ellis: I guess you are right. We will do just that. We’ll send a letter in two weeks to let you know how it goes.

Queen Ingrid: Very well.

Scene iii: The Athysia kingdom- two weeks later

Two weeks past and Queen Ingrid awaited the news from the Dorwin royals. Seeing as there hadn’t been any reported wars she was hopeful they’ve smoothed things over.

Soldier: Queen there’s a letter for you.

Queen Ingrid: Ah, Oliver thank you so much.

Soldier: No problem my queen.

Queen Ingrid (reads the letter): Dear Ingrid, I think you’ll be happy to hear we’ve patched things up with the other kingdoms. We, like Julie predicted didn’t get the full $55,000. We did get dang near close though. Close enough the other kingdoms agreed to let us pay the other half at the next kingdom competition. Which you bet now that we have a policy in progress. I will get my kingdoms title back.

See you soon

Sincerely King Kent Dorwin

Queen Ingrid: Like he thinks he can beat me. We will see about that.
