All my life when I would hear the word Corona I would think of beer. That's logical for me. I have been drinking beer my entire adult life from my teens on, and yes, I have had Corona and it's actually very good beer; lol a little expensive to drink everyday lol but, good none the less. However, now there is a new corona, which is a virus COVID-19 and this Corona is no joke. As of today, then latest numbers are over 23000 cases and 450 deaths and in New Jersey 2000 people in the hospital and 108 dead. There are many other cases in the U.S., which is now the most infected country. Our country right now is in a dire situation. The governors of New York and New Jersey are telling people to practice social distancing and stay home unless you must be out. All non-essentialworkers are told to stay home. But this may sound bad, and when it got real and hit home for me was when all the sporting events started gettingcancelled. First the NBA because a player was infected. Then the NHL followed completely because of the close nature of the sport. A few days later March madness hit, and the NCAA basketball tournament was cancelled, then the MLB postponed it's opening for at a few weeks. The Olympics may be postponed. And the one that really hit hard was the Kentucky Derby which has been run on the first Saturday in May for 145 years and has been postponed until September. If someone didn't know anything else and didn't watch news or follow anything exceptsports, then that would be your wakeup call that something was very wrong. Sports are a huge business and entertainment avenue in this country. Throughout the history of this country sports have always been there for us. During the Great Depression there were baseball stars like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig to watch. During world war 2 we had baseball admittedly the quality of the game wasn't it's best as many stars went tothe military like Ted Williams, Stan Musial, and Joe DiMaggio. During theKorean War we had baseball to watch with new young stars Like Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and Duke Snider to watch. Then the 60s came with theassassinations of JFK, MLK, and RFK. Sports continued and helped us get through. The exception of course is that the Sunday after JFK’s death, the AFL cancelled its games that Sunday and the NFL played. We had Vietnam with all the nightly horror brought into our living rooms. But sports continued, and then we moved forward all the way to September 11, 2001 and the horrible events of that day that still have ramification today. And sports were postponed, but they were only postponed for ten days. I still remember watching the game the night the Mets returned after 9/11 it was a tight game and late in the game when Mike Piazza hit what would be the game winning home, and the stadium went absolutely nuts. I thought Shea was coming down lol. After that the Yankees had their run to the World Series. Nine innings from ground zero and my pointto all these sports memories is these sports are not cancelled in this country for no reason. This is a serious situation with really no end in sight. We are being told to stay home, with no sports to watch. So of
course, we want this over as soon as possible. I want to go to the Mets games this year. And the only way for this to happen is for people to do what the government asks, stay in, and stay away from others. Get protection and use it. If you are sick don't go out and stop the public gatherings. I've been seeing on tv and social media people ignoring the social distancing. Remember, the longer you hold out and ignore the quarantine the longer the need for quarantine and distancing will be needed not to mention risk to others maybe your friends, family, and coworkers. Think about that. So that's all for now. Be safe and healthy. We are all in this together.
