An open road and a full tank of gas.
Am I moving forward or escaping my past?
The engine hums that highway tune,
A song so sweet, so steady and smooth.
Day covers itself with the blanket of night,
And the miles tick by with no end in sight.
The wary thoughts of a weary traveller,
Occupy the mind with each mile marker.
What went right, what went wrong,
The melody of life can be heard in every song.
The hour grows late and the mind begins to wander,
The road asks questions that I continue to ponder.
My eyes grow heavy, to sleep I shall fall.
But the highway casts a spell and I still hear it's call.
Yet I stop and stare up at the brilliant sky,
as if I can hear each star moan a solemn cry.
And their tears blaze across the heavens above,
To kiss the earth with their cosmic love.
And I close my eyes and wait for dawn,
So I can once again hear the highway's song.
