Her life was perfect. Living in the unknown quaint town that was off the beaten path for the past six months was just the new beginning she needed. It was everything she could have hoped for.

“I can finally breathe!” she smiled as she practically skipped down the sidewalk. Looking down at her small bag of goods she bought from the local shop, her mind began to wander.

Not long ago, she lived miles away in New York. The City That Never Sleeps was a far cry from where she was now. The smell of fumes. Buildings and concrete everywhere she looked and…the people. All those people. At one time, she loved the city life, now…now…

I’m glad to be gone. No more chaos. No more…

She stopped herself. “I promised myself I wouldn’t do this.”

She deeply breathed in the country air and slapped a warm smile on her face. “That life is behind me. I’m free.”

She continued to walk down the sidewalk. People stepping out of local business stopping and waving at her. She loved it! New York was cold and withdrawn. This place, her home, was beautiful and friendly.

One of the townsfolk was cheerful as she ventured up to her. By her side, a young girl who looked no more than six.

“Helen!” The woman called out as she came closer. Helen beamed and stopped in her tracks. “Mary. How are you?”

“I’m doing well, but never mind me. How are you? You seem to be very lucky!”

Helen frowned. Her eyes searched Mary’s face to try to figure out what she was talking about.

“Lucky? How am I lucky?”

Slightly confused herself now, Mary replied. “There was a huge floral truck outside of your house. How could you not know?”

A small bit of dread pricked her heart. “Do we even have a florist here?”

She was hoping for a yes.

She could see Mary surprise as the woman answered. “Why yes, we do. Just down the street there, but…”

Helen began to panic. “But what?”

Mary’s face grew concerned as Helen’s became overcome with terror. “They had New York license plates.”

Helen stared down as the little girl held up a red rose. “The nice man gave this to me. See? It’s pretty!”

Before Mary could say another word. Helen dropped everything and booked it down the sidewalk. She didn’t care that she was running into people.

No! This can’t be happening! I made sure! I made sure!

Sweaty and out of breath, she stopped in front of her little one bedroom home. It wasn’t much but she never was one for flair, that was him.

Helen slowly walked to her door. The closer she got the more horror she felt. Standing at her door, she squeezed her eyes shut as she grasped the knob. The door opened. The smell hit her senses before she even opened her eyes. “No! Please God, no!” She could feel the tears streaming down her cheeks. Stepping in, she opened her eyes. Hundreds of roses filled her home.

She knew they were from him:

He had found her.
