I the previous chapter of Parallel Universes Series (“I’m not afraid to die”), I mentioned an idea of and my interpretation of death, as we see it on Earth. Here is a quick reminder of how I put it:

If death is a result of old age or an illness, in other words, if the soul is aware of inevitable expiration of the pouch, the body is taken care of in this universe and the soul is travelling to another destination. In case of sudden death, the transformation is not planned in advance and might become disrupted. In such case, the soul could experience difficulties moving to another dimension and could become “stuck” in the universe it came from. The confused soul would logically stay close to its known surroundings or/and close to people who were playing a significant part during its lifetime. The soul is there but cannot interact with others, since it is not visible. Yet the soul is intelligent and able to hold emotions. Since it cannot move on, it will try to fit back in. It will try to materialise again by using all available energy sources in vicinity.

You might have a laugh reading this because I seem to treat energy as an intelligent entity but am I really that far from the truth? Is it really our physical body that has it all? Although the way the body is made, with all its magnificent abilities and adaption, is very near perfection, it is still susceptible to the dangers of its environment and very much expendable. Our bodies are not immortal, our bodies are very sophisticated containers; storage boxes for unlimited sources of energy, which in itself is a very intelligent agent that enables our body to live, to move, to exist. You might say that plants are alive too, yet they are not intelligent. Aren’t they? They grow, they multiply, they have many protective features and, as us, they do undergo a constant development called Evolution. I say, energies assigned to particular physical entities are on various levels. The type, amount and purpose of the assigned energy is carefully calculated and adopted to suit the physical body that it’s assigned to. You might ask, who is behind it all? Who assigns the energies to their destinations? Well, I have a theory about it too but that’s for another chapter. For now, we will explore the world of paranormal environment surrounding us here, on Earth. Let’s explore ghosts and hauntings, and see whether it is really just a fiction and our imagination, or is it a science as we don’t know it.

Ghost sightings are not a recent phenomenon. It is not known when exactly was the first time when a ghostly apparition was actually documented. Spiritualism itself bloomed in 1800’s but we can find a mention of it in literature as early as 1500’s (“Hamlet”) and even the ancient cultures spoke of reincarnation. Ghosts and afterlife are not the subjects confined to selected areas, it is a global phenomenon, which appears in various forms, characteristic to particular region, religion, beliefs etc. The existence of paranormal was going through phases over the centuries. There was a time when all the reports of ghosts appearances were treated very seriously. As the world developed and the people started thinking “technologically”, the ghost subject became a taboo, a fairy tale, a (bad) bed time story, a scary factor used as an entertainment as well as a way to scare people. The probability of ghostly existence had been shifted to a “loony – room” category and any believer could be categorised as a joker or simply insane. With the recent freedom of word and belief acceptance, we came to express our thoughts without fear of being locked up in the institution. With the spread of World Wide Web, people share they experiences and beliefs, tell stories. Many of them strongly believe that they experienced something that made them thinking about death and afterlife from different perspective. Of course there is a sceptic community, which makes it a mission to debunk everything what’s said about ghosts and paranormal in general. They refuse to admit that there is anything that cannot be explained, and if they really can’t explain some incidents, they will rather put it down to imagination or hallucination than admit that some things just don’t fit into the reality that we all well know. But there are different kind of sceptics; those who don’t believe in ghost sightings as something magical or supernatural. Half a glob cannot be a subject of the same hallucination. Other things, such as electricity or air travel, and many others, were considered a fantasy until the science proved otherwise. I am the “scientific” sceptic. I believe that there is a science behind all the ghost sightings. The science that we still do not understand but we will at some point in the future.

It is all down to energy. The real motor of life. Since people started telling their stories in public, we learned that all of them had very similar experiences. In almost all cases apparitions represent someone known to the witness, whether it would be a family member, or acquaintance; or it might be a stranger but usually the research reveals its connection with the place, where the sighting occurred. This is the first thing supporting my theory about energy staying close to the most memorable place or person.

Stone Tape Theory – is one of the scientific attempts to explain ghostly apparition. Wikipedia explains the theory very briefly:

The Stone Tape theory is the speculation that ghosts and hauntings are analogous to tape recordings, and that electrical mental impressions released during emotional or traumatic events can somehow be “stored” in moist rocks and other items and “replayed” under certain conditions. The idea was first proposed by British archaeologist turned parapsychologist Thomas Charles Lethbridge in 1961. Philosopher H. H. Price also invented a similar concept in 1940. Lethbridge believed that ghosts were not spirits of the deceased, but were simply non-interactive recordings similar to a movie. The idea was popularised in 1972 in a Christmas ghost story called The Stone Tape, produced by the BBC.

It is a very interesting approach but however probable, there are some issues with it. Witnesses are often able not only observe ghosts. Some people can actively interact with them, ask questions and receive answers. If we assume that apparition is a simple recording of the past, how come we are able to communicate in the present time? Unless the entity arrived from a Parallel Universe as a recording of the exactly the same situation that happened previously in that Universe, the Stone Tape Theory seems to have one major weakness.

There are various types of ghost and apparitions, about which I will talk later, as well as there are a number of different kind of hauntings. Each of them can be explained scientifically. I myself though, have my own theory and this is what I want to explore.
