Tim had been disappointed and dissatisfied before. He was tired of society's expectations of his status and rank. People always wondered about his love life and finances. Tim knew better than to lie. These people wanted answers that he was not willing to give.

Sometimes Tim imagines himself as a piece of wood that drifts along the coast. He longed to be a drifter, a free man. A man who could genuinely be free to go wherever he wanted whenever he pleased. Tim admired that piece of debris for all of its freedom.

Maybe Tim would take that piece of wood and build a ship. He could sail off to a deserted island and live off of his own resources. Whenever he wanted to leave, he could. There would be no schedule, no master plan. Tim would take things as they were handed to him.

On this island, Tim could find treasure or solve a mystery of a missing plane. He could bring evidence back of his discovery and be awarded some sort of medal.

Instead, Tim sat in a cubicle in New Jersey. He would answer the phone and fix people's machines. He would look up at the clock and wonder when he would get a raise.

If only, if only, Tim could be a drifter.
