Seven-Blue and Pink
Rays of morning sunlight flowed in through the bedroom windows. Jay lazily opens his eyes, finding his wife's arm across his chest. He turns his head to the left and sees Ava looking adoringly at him. Jay smiles at her.
"Good morning." Ava softly says.
Jay replies quietly: "Hi. What time is it?"
Ava looks at the digital clock on the stand. "Nine-thirty. Did you sleep well?"
Jay rolls his eyes as he ran his fingers through his brown hair. "Eh, somewhat. The baby was doing somersaults last night. I remember waking up around one, three, and five a.m. But it finally calmed down around six."
"Oh, my poor Blue Jay. Well, we both might as well get use to it. The baby is going to keep both of us up after its born." Ava says while she gently strokes Jay's face.
Jay nods. "Yeah, uh..." Before he continued to speak, he realized something. "Wait, did you call me Blue Jay?"
Ava was slightly taken aback. "Uh, yes. I did. I'm trying it out. I recall it was what your brother called you when he would tease you. Why? You don't like it?"
Jay reminiscently chuckled to himself, thinking about Ryan. He took hold of Ava's hand and held it gently. Then he says contently: "I'm okay with it. I actually liked hearing it again. Funny, the thing that I found most annoying now has grown on me."
"Do you miss Ryan?" Ava asks.
"Every day. I miss the immature stuff we use to do. He had the funniest sense of humor. Ryan was always there for me."
"I remember how musically talented he was. Do you think the baby will inherit his talents?"
"I think so." Jay says, carefully sitting up.
As he placed a pillow behind his back for support, Jay feels the baby rolling around. He excitedly pulls up the end of his tee-shirt over his belly. "Ava, fell my belly! The baby is moving."
Ava was still not use to seeing her husband pregnant. She was shy about touching his belly. Jay guides her hand towards the baby and places it gently next to his bellybutton. "Here. Feel that?"
She did feel the baby's movements. It was amazing. "Wow..."Ava says quietly. She places hear ear up against Jay's belly to listen. When she did, the baby kicked her, catching her by surprise. Ava laughs.
Jay laughs too. "Ha, ha!" The look on your face was priceless, babe."
"Oh, yeah. This baby definitely has your brother's sense of humor. You know, we should set up a doctor's appointment for an ultrasound next week."
"Um, actually I set up one already." Jay bit his lip.
"Oh, really?"
"A few days ago. Evan and Izzy are tagging along to find out their baby's sex." Jay explains.
"Who's the doctor?"
"Dr. Emily Gerard."
"She's the one that oversaw your surgery, right?"
"Yeah, she's a great doctor. The scar on my belly is hardly there anymore."
"So, when is the appointment?"
"Tuesday morning. Ten-thirty."
"Okay. I'll ask for the morning off from work so that I can go with you. Jay, do you want to know the sex of the baby?"
"Yes I do." Jay says affirmatively.
"Alright."
"What do you want to do today?"
"Well, Grace and I are going to take my parents to the airport this afternoon. They're heading back to Chicago...oh, no!" Ava gasps.
"What?"
"I just realized that my family doesn't know about the baby. My parents need to know they're going to be grandparents."
"Yeah, you're right. But just telling you I'm pregnant was hard." Jay admits.
Ava rubs her husband's shoulder. "We'll tell them together, okay? We're a team."
Ava gets up from the bed and opens the guest bedroom door to go into her and Jay's bedroom to change. Jay follows her. She opens the clothes drawer and looks through it for an outfit. Jay sits on the end of the bed.
"I'll can Grace and tell her we're coming over early." Ava says as she pulls out a light blue blouse and blue jeans.
As she was talking about something, Jay watched Ava as she slipped off her silky pajamas. It brushed against her naked creamy colored skin as it dropped to the floor, bearing her lovely backside and curves. Her movements overwhelmed Jay's emotions, spiking up his hormones. A warm fluttery feeling flooded his body. Jay hands became clammy and his heart rate climbed as she put on her jeans. Ava hooked the back of her bra, then slid on her blouse.
"You should be getting ready too, Jay." She turns around and sees Jay gawking at her. His mouth hanging open. "Jay, honey? Are you okay?"
Jay comes back to reality, taking his eyes off her backside. He gets off the bed then clears his throat. "Uh, yeah. I'm fine. Um... I'll get changed."
Ava smiles to herself, knowing that Jay was checking her out a few seconds ago. Ava goes to the bathroom to freshen up. Jay looked through the closet for something to wear. He picked out a grey shirt and the only pair of paternity pants he had, and put them on. Few minutes later, Ava comes back. She wraps her arms around Jay and kisses his neck. He could smell the perfume on her person. Ava smelled like lavender.
"Mmmm..." Jay breathes in the wonderful aroma. "You smell good."
"Like it?" She asks.
Jay nods. "Its nice."
"It's okay, you know." Ava whispers in his ear.
"What is?"
"You shouldn't have to be embarassed for looking at me like I'm the first woman you've ever seen in your life. I do remember you looked at me that way the first time we met."
Jay blushed. "Yeah, I did. But, its just that my emotions seemed to have overloaded. I've never experienced that before. It felt really awkward to me."
"Its just pregnancy hormones, Jay. It's common to feel an increase in...those feelings. Anyway, you don't need to feel awkward. I actually enjoyed the attention."
She kisses Jay on his cheek.
"Okay." Jay smiles.
"It looks like pregnancy agrees with you. You're getting a nice round tush." Ava observes. "I admit, it looks good. Mmm!"
Jay looks around to view his rear. "Really? Huh."
"Yep."
Jay walks to the bathroom and Ava gets her purse from the closet, taking out her cell phone. Then she calls Grace. On the third ring, Grace picks up.
"Hi, Grace. It's me." Ava says to her sister as she fixes her hair infront of the vanity. She sets the phone to speaker so that she could use the brush and curling iron.
"Hi. What's up?"
"Well, I know I'm suppose to be coming by later to help you take Mom and Dad to the airport. But is it okay if Jay and I come earlier? In about an hour to visit for a while?" Ava asks.
"Um, yeah. That's fine." Grace readily responded.
"Okay, good. See you soon."
"Okay, bye."
Ava hung up and continued fixing her hair. "What do you want for breakfast, honey?" She calls to Jay.
"French toast with chocolate syrup and a lot of pickles on top." Jay says back as he was brushing his teeth.
Ava shuddered inside at the thought of it. "Oh, that is soooo...disgusting." She thought. But she said this anyway: "Okay."
She finishes her hair by adding a small hair beret to keep one side of her curly hair behind her ear. Ava then goes into the kitchen to prepare breakfast.
Jay and Ava left the house at eleven o'clock and made their way to Grace's house. Ava drove while Jay sat in the passenger seat, nervously tugging at his seatbelt. The whole drive there, Ava reassured him that she was going to help him tell her family about the baby. They arrived at the house and parked the car in front.
"Ready?" Ava asks Jay as she unlocks her seat belt.
Jay took a deep breath and took off his seatbelt as well. "Let's do this."
"Don't worry. Everything is going to be okay." Ava says.
They get out of the car and walk towards the door. Ava holds Jay's hand, squeezing it gently.
Grace opens the door and smiles at the sight of her sister and brother-in-law. "Hi you two!"
"Hi, Grace!" Ava responded, hugging her sister. Then Grace hugged Jay.
"Come in. We're having coffee in the backyard on the deck." She says as she invites them in.
Grace leads them to the backyard, where her parents were sitting together on the deck's moon-shaped couch, holding their coffe cups. Diana and Henry waved as soon as they saw Ava and Jay. They all exchanged hugs and handshakes then sat down.
"How was your morning?" Diana asks Ava.
"It was restful. Jay and I slept in. Are you and Dad all packed for your flight?"
"Yes we are. We managed to get all your mother's entire wardrobe into her suitcase. That took up most of the morning." Henry jokes.
Diana nudges her husband's shoulder. "Honey, there are some things I cannot travel without. I believe I should be ready for anything. That is why I bring extra outfits."
"Can't argue with that kind of logic." Grace laughs.
"Did you redecorate your deck, Grace?" Ava asked her sister as she looked around the deck.
"Why, yes. I did last week. I figured it was time to change up the look."
"It looks great. It feels more open."
"Thank you." Grace smiles.
Ava holds Jay's hand then says: "Well, Jay and I were thinking of giving our guest bedroom a makeover."
"That's great dear. What did you have in mind?" Diana asks.
"We want to start with the walls first. We've picked out two colors, but we are having trouble deciding which to go with." Ava says.
"What colors did you pick?" Henry inquired.
Ava briefly glanced at Jay, subtly squeezing his hand, indicating to him it was time.
Jay responds to the question. "Blue and pink."
Jay and Ava watched the family really think about it.
Grace was the first to realize what Jay and her sister were saying. Her eyes widened with excitement and she points to Ava's belly. She exclaims: "You're pregnant! Oh! I'm so happy!" She gets up and hugs her sister.
Henry and Diana also become extremely happy at the news. "Ava, I'm so happy for you and Jay. Oh! Henry! We're going to be grandparents!"
Henry joyfully embraces his daughter. Eventually everyone sits back down.
"Thank you all. But there is something I have to tell you. I'm not pregnant." Ava says.
"Wait...what? But you just said you were." Grace was confused. So were Diana and Henry.
"No, I didn't say I was..."
"So, you're not really pregnant?" Henry asks.
"I'm not." Ava says. She puts her hand on Jay's belly. "Jay, you want to tell them?"
"Ava isn't pregnant. I...I am."
Henry and Diana were sitting in their assigned seats on the plane back to Chicago. They were still shocked that their son-in-law was having a baby instead of their daughter.
"Okay...I was not expecting that." Henry says to his wife.
"Me either."
"I really hoped that Ava would be pregnant instead of...Jayden. Call me old fashioned. But I believe the woman should only bear children. Not the man. I thought Jayden was normal."
"Henry, I understand how you feel. And Jay is normal. He just has an artificial womb inside of him that supports the baby. But ever since that freak chemical accident happened two decades ago, men have been able to carry children. It is now just a fact of life." Diana says to Henry.
Henry grumbles.
"Henry, you and I both know I wasn't the one who gave birth to Ava and Grace. You shouldn't judge Jay."
"We are not ever going to tell our her our secret. I just feel it would be better to have her believe that her mother brought her into the world."
Diana put on her reading glasses then opened up a novel that was sitting on her lap, and then started to read. "We're going back to visit Jay and Ava in three months, alright?" She says to Henry as she turns the book's pages.
"Okay."
Diana was quiet for a moment. Then she looks up from the book and smiles. "We're going to be grandparents, dear. It's exciting, isn't?"
"Even if our son-in-law is having our grandchild?"
Diana shot a stern look at him. "Yes, dear...even if our son-in-law is having our grandchild."
"Yeah...looking forward to it."
