The man in the mirror

Is a life long foe

He accompanies me every day

A dark silhouette

Mimics my every move

Making a mockery of

Every good intention,

Every positive emotion,

Every possible romance.

No second escapes his scorn

Minutes drag out in his presence

I try to convince him to like me;

Singing his praise

Writing his poems

Building sculptures in his name

But to no avail.

I tried keeping him away;

But like a magnet to metal

he is drawn to my pain

I build walls

And he breaks them down

I find peace

And he brings chaos

I find a hiding place

And he finds me

I find hope

And he crushes it.
