Acceptance means embracing what is, rather than wishing for what is not. When we accept difficult realities, we are capable of whatever positive feelings and experiences that may be attainable throughout those encounters. We find ourselves more at peace and able to experience life more deeply. Even so, acceptance must be guided by discernment - learning to identify the difference between what we can and cannot change. Someone once told me that "acceptance" to our faults, along with the faults of others help us to be patient and avoid hurtful kinds of criticism. By accepting faults, we grow to trust and celebrate strengths. Learning to accept oftentimes lead to growth and understanding.
*The Serenity Prayer* "
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. The courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Amen
