Sunlight peers through the blinds
The alarm clock sounds off
It’s time to get up, I tell myself
As I roll over to face a new day.
What day is it?
What time is it?
These things I ponder as I study the faces lined up on the dresser across the room.
Whose turn is it?
Who is appropriate?
Who will I meet?
What will I do?
Questions overrun my mind in deciding what face to put on.
Should I be the upright, conservative, preacher’s son?
Should I be the hard worker who has only money in mind?
Should I be the strong, masculine boyfriend to the one I don’t really love?
Should I be the lovesick puppy who chases after the one I can’t seem to have?
Should I be the fitness freak who spends every free moment working out?
Should I be the ultimate college student whom the professors like to deal with?
Should I be Mr. Happy-Go-Lucky who is everyone’s friend?
But wait.....where am I?
Not these alternate faces I observe, but the real me
Have I lost it or is it here?
Could I recognize it if I saw it?
Have I went so long without it that it’s just not here anymore?
Oh well, it’s time to go
I must choose one
No more time to look
I guess I’ll take this one and let it suffice.
