Growiing upThere was a boy in our neighborhood-MelvinHe was thirteen at the time and used to hang out with some of my friends-Both boys and girlsMelvin had what was called femininecharacteristics in speech and mannerismsSome of my male friends would callhim“Melvina”and imitate his mannerismsThe girls would get angry and tell them to stopThey would reply”we’re just kidding “Melvin didn’t hand out with us regularly but when he did the same ridicule was injected into the conversationMelvin was personable and intelligentbut that did not prevent some of the remarks continually reoccurring by a fewOne summer day- Melvin was then fourteenHe went up on the roof of our six storyapartment building and jumped offSo much for “just kidding”
