Growiing up
There was a boy in our neighborhood-Melvin
He was thirteen at the time and used to hang out with some of my friends-
Both boys and girls
Melvin had what was called feminine
characteristics in speech and mannerisms
Some of my male friends would call
him“Melvina”and imitate his mannerisms
The girls would get angry and tell them to stop
They would reply”we’re just kidding “
Melvin didn’t hand out with us regularly but when he did the same ridicule was injected into the conversation
Melvin was personable and intelligent
but that did not prevent some of the remarks continually reoccurring by a few

One summer  day- Melvin was then fourteen
He went up on the roof of our six story
apartment building and jumped off

So much for “just kidding”
