Day 1:

It happens in the middle of the night Bas was sitting in his room headphones in, working on his english paper when he heard the unmistakable noise of someone calling his name. Removing them he looked towards his door before getting up and opening it. Bas looked towards his parents room where the light was off indicating they were asleep shrugging he moved back inside closing the door once again. Just before he put the headphones back in he heard what sounded like someone whispering his name this time he looked at the air vent.

“What the fuck” he whispered to himself before a small knock on his door made him jump “Yeah?” he asked raising his eyebrows “Its me” His sister Lola's voice spoke behind the door “Um come in?” Bas replied in a questioning tone she opened the door with a confused look on her face “what did you want?” she asked leaning against the door frame “Uh? Nothing” He replied mirroring her expression. “What do you mean??? I heard you” she replied in an angry tone. Bas opened his mouth to reply when the whispers began from the vent again Lola stood up straight as she stared at it.

“The basement” they said in unison, getting up and pushing past lola to grab a flash light from the hall closet. They quietly made their way down the stairs and once their feet hit the final step the voices grew louder thinking it might've just been the tv they made their way to the living room where everything was turned  off and dark. Afterwards they made their way into the kitchen and flicked the light on before coming to a stop in front of the basement door.

At this point the voices seemed to be screaming their names “Bas! Lola!” they yelled sometimes mashing together and sometimes separate. The siblings shared a look before Bas opened the door and clicked on the flashlight “After you” Lola said gesturing ahead into the darkness Bas looked at her and chuckled shaking his head as he began his trek down the stairs. Halfway down a strong pungent odor hit him he gagged covering his mouth and nose with his hand “What's down there big brother?” Lola asked from her place in the kitchen “Uh I don't know but it smells really bad!” he exclaimed from behind his hand causing it to come out slightly muffled.

When his reached the bottom he swept the flashlight around the room a couple times the voices only yelling his name now and finally on the third time around he spotted something strange. The wall didn't look as it had the last time he was down there. Before it had a rather large hole in the brick from the time they tore it down to kill the large rat that had made its way into their walls now that hole was missing. Bas walked closer and the smell got stronger as did the voices he brought his hand up to touch the wall “Bas! What the hell are you doing down there!” his father shouted causing the 16 year old to jump.

“Ah nothing Dad! Just looking for a nail!” he replied mentally scolding himself a nail really?

Scanning his surroundings he finds one on a shelf by the stairs he grabbed it as he bounded up the stairs 2 at a time. He stopped in front of the older man and held the nail up to him with a smile on his face “Found one” he said.

James Preston looked angrily at his son before snatching the flash light from his hand “It's 2 in the morning go to your room” he demanded Bas looked around and caught sight of lola peeking in from around the corner he smiled before returning his attention back to his father. Raising three fingers he mock saluted him “Aye Aye Captain” Bas said sarcastically shoving past him.

He didn't make it far though before James grabbed his arm and turned him to face him “Bas you are under no circumstances to go down there do you understand me?” he asked menacingly Bas stared back at him in confusion before ripping his arm out of the elder’s grasp “Don't ever touch me like that again and I won't Dad” he replied spitting the last word out like it would kill him if he didn't.

The two stared at each other in anger for a moment before James’ look seemed to soften but his response held the same hostility as what he said before “Go to bed” he spoke pointing in the direction of the stairs.

Bas watched him for a moment longer before turning and making his towards the stairs first pausing in the doorway as his father closed and locked the basement door. That's really weird Bas thought before turning and finally going up to his room only to find Lola sitting on his floor knees pulled to her chest he shut the door behind him and sat down beside her bumping his shoulder against hers “What's up Lo?” he asked her she didn't reply just looked at him before she stood up and left the room closing the door quietly behind her. Bas stared at the door for a moment before grabbing the laptop off his bed and setting it on his desk. With one last look to the vent he shut off the light and got into bed.

Day 2:

Bas was woken up to a soft tapping on his face he swiped his hand through the air causing the source to giggle “Come on bassy! Its Saturday!” Lola exclaimed in excitement “Aren't you 13 why aren't you tired and angsty?” he asked shoving his face into his pillow.

“Well if that's the rule I'm the exception! Now come on you promised you'd watch 80s movies with me today!” she replied shaking his shoulder he sighed and sat up running both hands down his face in a gesture to wake himself up “That I did.” he replied. She laughed jumping up “I'll go make popcorn!” she shouted running off as he once again mumbled that I did to himself. As Bas sat there for a couple minutes he couldn't help but wonder if last night had actually happened or if he had just had a really weird dream.

Getting up he made his way down the stairs yawning he headed straight for the couch flinging himself across it and grabbed the remote off the table. “Hey, since when was there a lock on the basement door?” Lola asked as she sat down criss cross on the loveseat “What?” Bas asked lifting himself onto his elbows “Yeah there's a lock on the basement door now” she said nonchalantly.

“Right.” Bas replied like it wasn't a big deal as he dropped back down off his elbows. As they watched the movies he couldn't help but theorize about what was in the basement. “Hey Lolo?” he suddenly asked while they were watching their 5th movie “Yes Bas?” she asked “Why do you think dad freaked out about the basement thing last night?” he responded.

Lola shrugged in response a strange emotion passing briefly over her face before she smiled widely when the two actors kissed on screen. “Seriously Lo” he said sitting up to look directly at her she sighed “Maybe it's a body” she replied in exasperation. Bas stared at her for a moment before she burst into laughter “Come on big brother you can't possibly think I'm serious” she said as she continued to laugh. The boy cocked his head to the side “I really don't find that funny” he replied and she abruptly stopped laughing a blank expression on her face “Good you shouldn't” she replied before getting up and leaving the room.

“What the shit?” he asked out loud before he began looking around the room continuing to theorize about the basement and now thinking about Lola's weird reaction. Bas caught sight of something silver and small laying on the floor beside the tv stand. Upon further inspection it seemed to be Lola’s favorite necklace which he could've sworn she had just been wearing “Hey Lola!” Bas called up to her when he got no response he began his walk up the stairs.

Making his way to her bedroom he knocked on the closed door when she didn't answer he opened it slowly to find her standing and staring at the vent the same blank expression on her face as before without turning to look at him she pointed to the vent “Go back to the basement Bassy” she said in a voice not quite like hers. He stared at her in confusion before moving closer and putting his hand on her shoulder slowly she turned to look at him. “You seem to have dropped this.” He told her holding the necklace up between them lola reached a hand up and grasped the one on her neck “No I didn't.” She replied her voice back to normal as she walked past him out of the room.

Bas watched her leave in confusion before stuffing the necklace into his pocket. Now he felt an unexplainable urge to go back down to the basement. He looked around the room one more time before he walked out closing the door behind him he decided to go down the kitchen.

Once there he walked directly to the basement door he stared at it for a moment before lifting the lock and examining it. Dropping it he walked towards the drawer by the sink as it hit the door with a clang. Yanking open the drawer he began digging through it looking for a key, before long he had looked through all of the drawer “Fuck!” he exclaimed pushing the last one closed aggressively.

He tilted his head to the side “Their room” he decided out loud he hurried up the stairs and to the end of the hall coming to a stop with his hand on the knob. He'd never been in there it had always been a rule that they weren't aloud to go inside the parents room even if they had nightmares when they were younger. After hesitating a moment longer he swung the door open quickly stepping inside and quietly closing it behind him, turning around he saw why they weren't aloud inside there were 2 beds which indicating they weren't happy. Bas chuckled to himself he wasn't surprised in the slightest with how much they never saw each other and how horrible they were as people.

He began his search looking through drawers, and discarded pants, trying to keep everything where had had found it in the first place. After a good 30 minutes he ran out of places to look and patience, slamming the last drawer closed he left the room. Taking one last look as he shut the door to make sure everything was in place he turned around to find Lola watching him silently.

“Jesus!” he exclaimed while he jumped she stared a moment longer before all emotion seemed to find its way back into her expression cocking her head to the side she asked “I'm hungry whats for lunch?” he watched her for a moment seemingly at a loss for words “Umm….Pizza?” he replied “Yes!” she shouted before running off.

Sure okay whatever weirdo he thought following after her. Later that night long after Lola had gone to bed and their parents had returned Bas once again found himself standing in front of the basement door reaching up he ran his fingers along the wood while the voices called his name once again. He stayed there for what felt like an hour before he headed up to bed for the night.

Day 3:

That night Bas was woken up by screaming. He shot up and out of bed breaking into a run to the source finding it in the living room his eyes grew wide in disbelief. His mother was sat on her knees staring down at the floor where a rather large puddle of blood had formed his father stood beside her his posture practically radiating anger.

Bas had yet to see what had caused the blood or the scream but once his father stepped around his mother he got a clear line of sight. He felt as if he had stopped breathing there Lola lay blood gushing from a wound in her head her eyes wide open staring blankly.

He brought a hand up to his mouth as he gagged, tears began to flow freely down his face as his father marched back into the room with a large trash bag “What- What are you doing?” he asked his question went unnoticed as his father began stuffing the girl into the bag. The he proceeded to clean the floor before pulling a rug over it to hide the stain. Bas watched in shocked silence as neither of his parents seemed to notice him. Once finished he roughly grabbed his wife's arm “Not one word of this to Bas you understand me? He never finds out” he told her before letting go of her causing her to fall back.

Shooting awake Bas sat gasping for air on his bed for a couple minutes “Just a dream” he mumbled to himself “Just a dream” he repeated falling back onto his bed with a chuckle. “Not a dream” a voice spoke up from his floor bolting back up into a sitting position he found Lola sitting with her knees drawn up to her chest, she looked dirtier than the last time he had seen her and something seemed to be in her hair.

Crawling to the edge of the bed Bas noticed she wasn't looking at him he put his hand on her shoulder. A moment later she turned to face him, he realized dried blood caked half her face causing him to jerk back in shock.

Looking her dead in the eyes now he was speechless. Without a word she stood up and left the room stopping at the door she beckoned him to follow her sliding off the edge of his bed he did just that. She lead him out into the hall and towards their parents room they came to a stop just outside their door Bas looked at her in confusion “Don't worry they're asleep” she told him before opening the door he held his breath as she disappeared inside the room for in reality what was a minute but to him felt like hours.

She came out holding the key "Find me." she pleaded pressing it into his hand before disappearing. Bas stood there starting blankly at the spot she just occupied before mechanically making it down to the basement door. He looked at it for a moment before swiping the flashlight off the kitchen counter.

Making his way down the stairs he turned it on. Its beam landed on a sledgehammer in the corner of the room and he immediately walked over to it. Gripping it tightly he moved in front of where the hole used to be. "You aren't going to like this brother." She told his as she eased the flashlight from his grip. Baz swallowed and with a nod and raised the sledge hammer up bringing it down.

Ignoring the sting in his arms he brought it down again.

Again

Again

Again

"Bas! What are you doing!" His moms frantic voice called as she ran down the stairs. Ignoring her he brought it down again.

The hole was clear no he could see inside again. The smell was worse and his father had joined them shoving him up against the wall "I told you to not come down here again." He growled. Bas met his eyes clenching his jaw "What did you do to her?" He ground out looking between his parents. "It was an accident." Mary said from behind her hand "You accidentally killed my sister and then hid her body in the fucking wall?"he asked clearly outraged.

"You pushed her didn't you? He dad?" His gaze returning to the man in front of him whose grip had tightened on his arms "You dont know shit." Was the reply that came. "Get the fuck off." Bas demanded pushing him away. "She was upset because he was yelling and she told him to leave."his mom explained fresh tears running down her face "Shut up Mary we said-" James began "No you! Said you said we shouldn't tell you told me not to call 9-1-1 what if she was still breathing?" Mary said moving closer to them "I was." Came Lola's soft reply from beside him.

"Mom what are you doing?" She asked even though the woman hadn't seemed to have heard her. It was then Bas realized the hammer was missing he looked back toward his father just in time to watch as him mother brought the sledge hammer down on his head.

Bas tried to move closer to the wall as Mary dropped the hammer "Fuck you." She spat before looking back at her son "I'm so sorry." She said with a sob. Bas nodded before sliding down the wall.

Last day:

"I'm going now." Lola spoke from where she lay beside him on the carpet. Bas nodded bringing his hands up to wipe away fresh tears pooling in his eyes. Lola touched a hand to her necklace and then to the one that rested against his chest "I love you." "I love you too." He replied. Lola smiled as she faded.
