Do you think in the end Oliver got his redemption or did you wish it turned out differently?

[B]——————————-

My name is Alea Jane and when I was eight years old the name Oliver Darriel Terry was one the whole world feared. Not because Mr. Terry was a bad man, no it was quite the contrary. Mr. Terry was a nice man and a kind person, but the entire world was told he did a very bad thing. To understand how the fear of the world was justified you need to understand the predicament the world was in. You see at that given time the world was battling an apocalyptic virus as they called it. You’ve seen the zombie movies of people who used to be somebody just roaming the streets now eating someone. That’s how it was for us and the government had been trying to contain it for two months. When it just spiraled out of control and was nearly impossible to contain. In a matter of 4 days 700, more people had been infected and they infected even more. That’s when the world got the news about Mr. Terry and what he did. It was everywhere that Oliver Darriel Terry had started the virus and that anyone he met had and would get it too. That he was the reason it spiraled out of control and killed over 700 more people. We were told he wasn’t stopping and planned to wipe out all of humanity. The government had detained him from his home in Nashville Tennessee and the president had declared he was sentenced to execution for his crimes. The government in a sick and twisted way declared it to be in the center of town and everybody be present for it. That request and the hundreds of zombies that ambushed had caused 8 year old me and 34 year old Oliver Terry to meet.

“Hey, kid did you get hurt?!”

“My Daddy I lost my Daddy.”

“Okay, don’t worry I will find him. What’s their name?”

“Tyler Jane, I think.”

”I’ll find him you stay right here, ok?”

”Wait! She said in increased fight, ” where are you going?”

She backs up as the guy disappears, but she can hear the faint call for Tyler Jane being yelled through the crowd. She does what he says and stays but repeats the question of ”Where did you go?” In a whisper, as she stands in the crowd of people running. It seems 20 minutes have passed when someone or something is dragging her by the arm until they stop in a convenience store.

”Hey! Little girl are you ok? Did you get bit?”

”My Daddy? You didn’t find my Daddy?”

”N...no I’m sorry. I couldn’t find him. Now answer my question were you bit by the zombies?”

”Bit? No. I wasn’t bitten.”

”Good, good. Looks to be thousands of them out there. Must have moved up here from Tennessee. Dang, how did nobody notice their arrival in New York? Yeah, we will probably be stuck here together for a while. We should get to know each other. Let’s start with how old are you?”

”You’re a stranger. Daddy said don’t tell strangers your name or age.”

”I’m not going to hurt you. I just want to keep you safe. How about I tell you my age? Then you tell me yours? I’m 34 years old.”

”I’m 8.”

”8? Wow! This must all be pretty scary for you.”

”I’m fine. My Daddy said I’m brave. So I’m gonna be brave.”

”Well, your Daddy is a smart guy. What’s your name?”

”Alea Jane. Your name is Oliver.”

”You know my name?”

”Yeah. My Daddy told me about you. He made me watch the news with him. He said you were a bad man. Are you a bad man?”

”So you know all about me huh? I see my reputation precedes me. Well, Alea since we’re probably gonna be spending quite a while with each other. How about you decide. When I ask you later you tell me if I’m a bad man?”

”Okay, I can do that.”

”Great. Now it seems our excellent luck has landed ourselves inside a store. Go ahead and find anything you think we may need.”

”Like what?”

”Food, clothing, batteries, and water. Can you look for those things?”

”Yeah! I can!”

”Good I’m gonna go lock the front doors.”

“We need somewhere to go! So stop fighting with one another and get your butts walking.”

“Buzzkill much. Where do you propose we go for safety? Last I checked most buildings are boarded up after the ambush.”

“That ambush was months ago there has to be somewhere to go. There has to be at least food and water somewhere.”

“Yeah because there was totally food and water in the last 4 buildings we entered.”

“Shut it Avery! I said I was sorry. What happened to Neal was totally accidental.”

“He died Jess from a zombie. Just yesterday, how can you act like everything’s fine? We can’t just keep scouring houses in hope of supplies.”

“I have to do something Avery. You of all people should know this.”

“You have to do something, exactly. You’re not doing anything though. We aren’t finding food, water, or sleep.”

“Jess! Avery! Stop the bantering and look!”

“What? Can’t you see we’re busy?”

“The convenience store there’s a guy outside. A living human guy!”

“What, are you serious?”

“It’s hot out here Ollie.”

“Ollie? Is that the name you’ve chosen?”

“Yes. Do you like it?”

“I do. Why’d you choose Ollie?”

“I like it. I had a kid named Ollie in my class.”

“Oh really?”

“Yeah. I hated him. He liked to try and steal my pencils.”

“Oh, ok then.”

“Ollie.”

“Yes?”

“Who are they?”

“Hmm? What are you...Alea get behind me.”

Standing firm with a knife on hand “Who are you? State your names. Have you been bit?”

“I’m Avery Dallas. This is my sister Jess Dallas. Along with our friend Jamie Sparks. We had a friend who was bit but he turned yesterday.”

“If you’d all like to come in we have food and water you can have.”

“I’m no fool. We aren’t entering the store.”

“Jess? Why not? He seems nice.”

“Idiot, do you not recognize this man?”

“Hmm, what? Hey! You’re Oliver Terry! You’re the cause of this!”

“You killed so many innocent people with the virus!”

“Avery take his pack. You know Mr. Terry I could shoot you right now. End the threat of you against humanity. I could do it right now and would it be murder? You were gonna be executed and most of humanity is gone anyway. I should do it. You are probably infecting us as we speak anyway.”

“Don’t hurt Ollie!,” Alea said as she stuck her head out from behind Oliver with foggy eyes and her body shaking. He is a nice person, please!”

“Oh crap! You’ve got a kid with you?”

“How did she end up with you? Why is she calling you Ollie?”

“If you’d please get the gun away from my face I’ll explain.”

”Jess sis lower the gun.”

”Okay talk.”

”This is Alea Jane she’s 8. We ran into each other while running after the hoard ambushed my execution. She called me Ollie because we were trying to pick out a new name for me. Obviously, she chose Ollie.”

”A new name? To get rid of your reputation? Have you had many guns to your face these days Mr. Terry? Did you infect them all considering you’re alive?”

”Jess! There’s a little kid here.”

”Don’t worry I’m brave! Right, Ollie?”

”Yes, Alea you are. Why don’t you go hang out in the office room for me? Just for a little bit?”

”Us three can talk inside about whatever you want.”

”What happened to her family? Didn’t you try looking for them?”

”I did. Her Dad he uh didn’t make it. Got bit as soon as I got to him.”

”Why did you start the virus.”

”That’s the thing uh Jess, I didn’t.”

”What?”

”I didn’t start it and I sure as heck didn’t spread it.”

”Then who did?”

”That’s what I’ve been wondering myself.

I grew up in an orphanage you know. Was dropped off there as a baby. I didn’t get adopted until I was 15. Said I was a troubled kid and nobody wanted me. After that well, I didn’t lead an honest life and by 33 I wanted to know my ancestry.

I took one of those DNA tests that show your family tree. I waited for weeks for the results through mail or email. That’s when I got woken up at 4:30 am to someone obnoxiously pounding on my front door. I answer and there are about 7 government officials all armed saying they seen my DNA results. I need to come with them immediately. 7 hours later and I’m being sentenced to execution.”

”Why change your name if you’re innocent.”

”Helicopters they are tracking my name through their database. The government officials I’m guessing. To truly be off the grid I need to get to Tennessee to the center tower. I can manually change my name into something, not in their database.”

”Did you ever see the DNA results?”

”No, I wish I did.”

”Here’s a deal we help you get to the tower to change your name then you help us in trying to stop the virus.”

”Stop the virus? How?”

”We don’t know yet. We’d like your help with it though.”

”Yeah, man think of it like the redemption of Oliver Terry. The man formerly accused of starting the virus actually helps in ending it.”

”Okay, I’ll help. We have to make sure Alea stays safe though.”

”Well dang this is easier said than done.”

”Ollie, I’m scared.”

”Alea don’t be. You’ll stay here with Avery and Jamie. Jess and I will go change my name and be out of the tower before you know it.”

”Okay, Ollie. You are brave?”

”Yes I’ll be brave and so will you.”

”You and Alea seem to trust each other well. I would’ve assumed you were her father if I didn’t know the truth. Ever thought of having children of your own?”

”Ha no, children were never in the cards for me. It just wasn’t anything that was ever a goal in my life.”

”Well if it counts I think you’d be great with them.”

”It doesn’t but thanks. Where’d you get your gun by the way?”

”My father gave it to me why?”

” It’s a useless gun. It’s never gonna fire.”

”What? What do you mean?”

”Look in the right corner embroidered in gold. What’s it say?”

”Terry products. Wait? Your names Terry? You made this?”

”Yes madam I did. That whole line was faulty versions that didn’t fire. They weren’t supposed to go out to the public, but they did.”

”You’ve just got a lake full of secrets huh Terry?”

”That’s only if your fishing for them? We’re here come on.”

”So how’d you three end up alone if you don’t mind me asking? I mean I’d want to go through this with my brother but how about Jamie?”

”Our parents were scientists and Jamie always loved their experiments. She decided to be a scientist as well. When we learned of the outbreak Jamie started on working to find a cure. We ran to her lab and then started walking a year ago.

”Wow. Hey, I got in and have a first name but I need middle and last.”

”The first is Ollie right?”

”Yes.”

”How about Ollie Oliver Frost?”

”I like it thanks.”

”No problem. Do you really think the world would forgive you for this? Like I mean to let you have your redemption since you didn’t cause this?

”Don’t know. We must help the world first. Nobody can forgive me if there’s nobody else left alive. There done my name is now legally Ollie Frost.”

“What was that?.” Asks Jess as a whistling glass shattering sound is heard,” are those what I think they are?”

“If you think they’re zombies then yes. Jess, I hope you can fight because we gotta kill them to get out.”

“Good thing my Dad made me take karate as a kid.”

The two stood in a fighting stance ready for the zombies to come. Oliver grabs a shotgun from the desk beside him. He checks how many rounds it has and nods his head at the 5 rounds in the firearm. Jess grabs a knife from her back pocket. Goes left then lunges toward the zombie. She throws her hand forward splicing the knife through their head.

Oliver backs up and fires at a zombie lunging forward. He leans his head down. Then puts his hands on his knees.

“Ugh ouch. Damn recoil.”

“You good”

“Ugh yeah”

Oliver stands up and aims. Killing the zombies as they come forth.

Jess takes the knife and plunges it through the zombie’s skulls. Killing them as they tumble to the ground.

Two come up as she prepares to take them down. She lunges forward as one goes behind her. They try to attack when she screams as Oliver takes the shot.

In a haze, she wakes with a ringing in her ears and a pounding head. Slight tingling pain in her legs.

She’s the disheveled room riddled with dead bodies, bullet shells, and glass.

Calling out for Oliver but getting no response. She starts to retreat back to the exit. Opening but closing the day when hearing a whooping couch come from the room they were in.

She limps into the room to see someone moaning in pain.

“Oliver! Your hurt”

“Ah. Ouch. I told you. Damn recoil.”

“Have you never held a gun?”

“I’ve held one. Fired one I have not.”

“Are you ok? That’s a lot of glass.”

“I’m talking to you so I seem to be doing ok.

My stomach hurts like hell though.”

“Here let me see. Can you lift your shirt?”

“How’s it look.”

“Uhh, I’m not sure how to say.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, Oliver I’m not sure how to tell you this. Your blood is yellow.”

“What? Yellow!”

“Yes, it’s a dull yellow. Has your blood always been like this?”

“I uh didn’t even know it was yellow. Why’s it yellow that doesn’t sound good.”

“We will talk to Jamie and see what she says.”

“Oh my god! Oliver are you okay?”

“I I’m ok don’t worry.”

“Don’t believe him. We found something odd while in there.”

“Odd how exactly?”

“My blood. My blood its a dull yellow color.”

“What? Did you just say your bloods yellow?”

“Yes. Do you know why?”

“No, but I can try to find out. We gotta go to the lab to do that.”

“Then lets go.”

“Jess.”

“What’s up Oliver?”

“How’s your leg? You’re limping. I didn’t hurt you when I shot the zombies did I?

“My legs are fine Oliver don’t worry about me. Do you feel ok?”

“I feel fine. I got no glass in me from the fall. I’ve probably lived 34 years with my blood this way it’s not gonna kill me now.”

“Optimist I see.”

“Optimism is the only thing keep most people sane nowadays.”

“Are you implying that’s why your sane?”

“Ha no. The only reason I’m sane is because of Alea. I seen as her father got bit and smothered by zombies. There wasn’t anything I could do to save him. Making sure that Alea has a father figure she can look up to, well that’s what keeps me sane. What about you?”

“Avery. He may be an annoying pain in the butt but he’s my brother. Without him I would’ve gone crazy awhile ago.”

“Huh so you pointing a gun to my head months ago was you sane? I would not want to meet crazy Jess.”

“Ugh you’re impossible.”

“I’ve heard that before believe it or not. So how far’s this lab?”

“Oh. we have a long walk ahead of us. About a year at most and since it’s winter soon and more zombies are showing up we could be slowed down even more.”

“I thought we were in a hurry. I mean yellow bloods quite alarming right?”

“Yeah and Jamie will keep an eye on you. She’ll document how you perform in day to day life. Make sure it has no negative side effects to you.”

The five of them walked for miles and miles turned into weeks and weeks turned into months. Winter came and left and the five continued walking to the lab. With no change in Oliver’s physical or mental health Jamie was getting less and less worried.

“Alea wait up!”

“I want to do it Ollie please. You got to search the last one and I might have to do it in the future.”

“Alea I just don’t want you getting hurt.”

“I’ll be fine Ollie. I have to hit them in the brain and don’t let them touch me.”

“Exactly, ok I’ll be right over there with the others. You clear out the room and meet back with us. If you get in trouble yell for us all.”

“Let me guess she demanded to do it herself?”

“Against my better judgment yes she did.”

“She’ll be fine quit being so paranoid. You’ve taught her well.”

“Oh thanks for the vote of confidence Avery. She’s only 10 and still has limitations you know.”

“Yeah but my brothers right you’ve taught her well. She can correctly hold a knife or machete and kill a moving target. She can even shoot a firearm although her aim isn’t great yet.”

“Well thank you both. I’m still scared for her though. She’s not invincible and we are almost to the lab. If Jamie finds out something bad and I can’t protect Alea. She needs to know she’s not invincible.”

“You’ll be there we will make sure of it.”

“What you guys talking about?”

“Alea?”

“Ha I knew you could do it!

“Yeah It went fine.”

“Hey folks were here!”

“What? Finally?”

“Are you serious?”

“Oh my god we made it.”

“Yes we did.”

“Alea, Oliver welcome to my lab. State of the art technology and back up generators so we have electricity.”

“Good. So we can start tests?”

“Yes, I’ll start tests on you to figure out why it’s yellow.”

“Alea if you go down the hall to your left there’s a bedroom you can sleep in.”

“Okay thanks Jamie!”

“What kinda tests we doing?”

“Three simple tests that’s all. I’ll run your blood through this machine to see whether it’s more red or white blood cells. I’ll put it in her to look at it microscopically, lastly I’ll be doing a DNA test.”

“How’s a DNA test gonna help figure out what’s wrong?”

“It won’t tell us whats wrong but it can tell us if anyone has the same blood as you.”

“I’m gonna just take some blood. It’ll only hurt a little.”

“What’s your biggest concern Jamie?”

“My biggest concern is that it isn’t red. Last I’ve heard only animals have been seen with yellow blood. A human without red blood a big red flag.”

“Could it kill me?”

“Not sure. From what I’m looking at though it looks no different from red blood. It has platelets, red blood cells, and white blood cells. It’s doing exactly what red blood would do. There’s nothing cornering when looking at it microscopically either.”

“What about DNA test?”

“It’s still calculating.”

“Would it show his parents? Like the DNA test he took two years ago?”

“Maybe, this will just show us who may match his blood. Whether it’s his parents well that’s hard to tell.”

“My clothes said Oliver Darriel Terry on them when they found me. So their names got to be Terry.”

“Yep, and we have got 1 match.”

“Who is it?”

“55 year old Thomas Abigail Terry from DC. He had one kid when he was 21 to a girl named Teresa Quail. It says he was seen with the child for about a week before the kid was put in adoption. When Thomas cut himself accidentally at work his blood had appeared yellow in color. Scared for the child Teresa took him and brought him to a orphanage then left. Nobody ever found out what was wrong with Thomas before he disappeared 12 years later never to be seen again.”

“This is my father? He’s just like me?”

“It appears though but that doesn’t help. They never found out what was wrong.”

“Then you figure it out Jamie. You used to help our parents all the time. I’m sure if anyone can figure out it would be you.”

“Okay I’ll try.”

“Three weeks we’ve been here three weeks and I still don’t know what the hell is wrong with Oliver.”

“You’ll find it in the meantime have you gotten any closer to a cure?”

“I wish but no, I haven’t.”

“Hey Jamie! Hey Jess!”

“Hey Alea how are you today?”

“I’m good! Avery said he’ll cut my hair today.”

“Well isn’t that nice of him. Can you get Ollie in here for us?”

“Sure! Ollie Jess wants you!”

“Alea what’d I say about yelling.”

“Sorry Ollie. I forgot.”

“Just be quieter next time okay? What’s up Jess?”

“Do you think you could give Jamie a hand today? She’s trying to find the cure and needs a zombie from outside.”

“From outside? Like kill it and bring it here?”

“Yeah. Could you help?”

“Yeah sure. We doing it now?”

Yep.”

The two walk outside with knives and the gate keys. Jamie opens the gate and Oliver walks through. Two zombies stand by the side of the gate not seeing Oliver yet. He sneaks up being them and kills the one with a knife to the head. Then kicks the other as it falls backward onto spikes. Oliver begins to pick the zombie up when he hears Jamie yell. Oliver turns around just as a zombie with grey skin, grey eyes, and a jumpsuit attacks. Jamie stood as she watched Oliver tumble to the ground and the zombie tumble on top of him. She takes 15 seconds then grabs the bow from inside the gate and shoots the zombie in the head. Then rushes to Oliver while screaming his name.

“Oliver! Oliver! Are you ok? Answer me!”

“No.”

“Oliver?”

“No.”

“Ollie?”

“I I’ve been scratched.”

“No, no. You can’t be.”

“Jamie he literally was on top of me. I could be a walking corpse right now.”

“You’re the one who’s suppose to live. You don’t die! We die saving you! What do we tell Alea?”

“We don’t. She doesn’t need to know.”

“Oliver she...”

“Doesn’t need to know. This is my fault and I’m not gonna put this on her.”

“We have to tell Jess. She cares about you she should know.”

“Okay. We tell her.”

“Hey! You two are done already. That was fast. Who was the guy before the outbreak?”

“His name was Louis Slides. Looks like he got bit on the shoulder.”

“What’s up with you Oliver? You don’t look too hot.”

“Jess. Something happened outside.”

“What do you mean? What happened?”

“I was stupid and dropped my guard. I got scratched Jess.”

“You’re infected?”

“...Yes.”

“What about Alea? Who’s gonna care for Alea? You’re like her father she can’t live without you.”

“There’s nothing we can do. You know this! I’m gonna turn whether we like it or not.”

“I’ll find the cure. I’ll work all day and night. I won’t stop.”

“Jess, I’ll be gone by then.”

“We can’t lose you. You’re suppose to have your redemption remember?”

“I’m sorry.”

“I know you...what the heck?”

“What is it Jess?”

“The zombie look at him. His skin it has coloration to it.”

“Oliver look your blood from the scratch it got on him.”

“Oh my god she’s right. You’re blood it touched his arm.”

“Oliver come over here real quick. This is a zombie I picked up a few years ago and put in here. Can I draw your blood real quick?”

“Yeah sure go ahead.”

Jamie took his blood then injecting some on the zombies skin. They stare intently as the eyes turn back into a green color and the skin goes from grey to tan.

‘He’s a human again. I can’t believe it. Oliver your blood it has a cure.”

“So they are human again?”

“Yes. They are still dead but they’re human again.”

“We could save the world now. How do we administer a cure that’s inside Oliver though? We can’t exactly take that much blood out of him.”

“Yeah and we won’t have to. I’ll explain in a minute but we need Alea and Avery in here before I do.”

“What’s going on Ollie?”

“We found a cure for the zombies sweetie.”

“You can stop the zombies? We can walk outside now?”

“We will soon Alea but first we have to give everyone the cure.”

“How do we do that sis?”

“Remember when the president had sprinkler systems set up in every street and house?”

“Yeah they’d always go off during summer.”

“Well there’s 4 separate towers around the world and each tower covers one section of the world. The towers are what controls the sprinkler systems in that area. If we can get Oliver up there and get some of his blood in the pipes. It’ll come out the sprinklers and hit every zombie in the area.”

“What about limitations? Does the cure have limitations?”

“Yeah it doesn’t bring them back alive because these two are still dead.”

“Their bite wounds are still their too. It didn’t repair them or anything.”

“Yeah they have to be medically fixed.”

“Isn’t that a risk I mean some people have many gnarly bite wounds.”

“It’s a risk we have to take. We can’t have zombies re entering that part of the world though. We need plywood and steel beams preferably. We set it up along the perimeter and it keeps the people safe while they wake up. Oliver, Alea and me will go to the top of the towers to start the sprinklers. Jess, you and Avery will be below with megaphones to help the people when they wake up. Once were done we’ll go to the next tower.”

“It’s worth a shot.”

“Agreed.”

“lets do this thing.”

“I don’t have a choice I’m only 10, but lets do this!”

They walk and get the supplies then head there way to the first perimeter mark.

“Okay this is where the sprinklers will stop spraying. So we set up wood all along here so they can’t get in. Avery, Jess you to start that while us three head to the tower.”

“Okay be safe you three.”

“Be brave Avery!”

“Thanks Alea I will.”

“The tower should be a 10 minute walk from here.”

“Alea before we get there I want to talk to you.”

“Yes Ollie?”

“It’s gonna be scary,ok. There may be zombies in the tower and we’ll have to kill them. If there are I want you to stay I don’t want you killing them. You need to stick by me and Jamie.”

“Okay. I’ll be brave.”

“Good. Let’s do this thing.”

The three climb the tower stairs making there way higher and higher. Killing zombie after zombie on each floor. They punch them as they fall off the tower. They shoot them then run higher up the stairs. They get to the top and it’s filled with buttons and controls. Pipes filled with water bordered the walls. Signs indicating the different stations including one labeled water supply station. They run over there and Jamie draws blood while she tells Alea to push the big green button. The pipe shoot opens and Jamie loads up the blood into the shoot and tells Alea to push the big red button. The shoot is loaded up so Jamie pushes the on button and launch all. They all run back down the stairs to the exit. Making it with no problems at all.

“We did it!”

“Did it work?”

“We’ll find out let’s go look.”

Over near the plywood wall Avery and Jess watched as people gained color back and slowly started to wake back up. Dazed and confused about what happened they stare around them. Then they grabbed their megaphones and delivered the news and told everyone to direct them toward any injured people. Then the two got to work on everyone.

“They are staring at you Ollie. Why are they staring?”

“Just keep walking sweetie.”

“They’re whispering about you. They’re pointing.”

“Alea just keep walking, please.”

“Ollie, but there all looking.”

“Hey. You go find the others ahead of us Oliver.”

“Thanks Jamie.”

“Did I do something wrong? We fixed the people shouldn’t he be happy?”

“He is happy Alea. I think he just realized that these people see him as a bad guy still.”

“Oh, how do we get them to see him as good?”

“We can’t. We just continue helping everyone ok?”

“Okay.”

The 5 all regroup and after getting all injured inside a hospital they get some gas from a resident and borrow a car. They drive all the way to the second tower and do the same as before. They separate and Avery and Jess set up the wall and the other three go in the tower. They exit with people staring and whispering after recognizing Oliver. They help the injured then go on there way to the third tower.

“Can we switch it up this time?”

“Why Jess you don’t want to be here with me?”

“I do Avery but I want to help in the tower.”

“Is that ok with you Jamie?”

“Yeah, go ahead Jess I’ll help Avery with the wall.”

“Thanks Jamie.”

Jess, Oliver, and Alea go up to the tower entrance. Oliver attempts to open the door but it doesn’t budge. He wipes the dust off the door with his sleeve as Jess enters through a side door. Upon seeing inside he silently curses under his breath so as not to let Alea hear. Hundreds of zombies now crowded the tiny room Jess had trapped herself in. He runs to the door with Alea close behind. He tries to pull or push it open but to no avail as it won’t budge. He hands Alea a pistol and tells her to look around back for another entrance. She questions where Jess went and if she’s ok. He turns to the door and just yells  “Go now dang it!” she stammers out a response then runs behind the building. She runs back 5 minutes later to find him banging on the door calling out to Jess. Hearing her he turns and demands to know whether there is an entrance. She say’s yes there are stairs that lead to the third floor.

They both run to the back and he basically catapults himself up those stairs. He ran down the flight of stairs killing any zombie who even dared crossed his path. He got to the first floor to see hundreds of zombies. He starts shooting them and shoving his way through them only to stumble upon Jess. Without fighting much at all he makes it back to Alea and runs back up. Alea runs after him trying to get his attention. He ignores her and keeps going on.

They get to the top floor and he goes to continue out the mission. Alea tries to talk to him seeing a cold look on his face and no emotion in his eyes. He continues to ignore her and takes two things of his blood. He injects one into the shoot for the sprinklers. Then he spins around grabs Alea’s arm and injects her with it as well. Frightened she cries and yells at him. He calmly pushes the buttons grabs and picks her up. Walks downstairs catches a final glance at Jess before leaving the tower.

He puts Alea down and then slowly walks back to the others they can see talking to survivors. Alea in the back walks behind with her head down and foggy eyes as her body trembles.

“Man they look like they’ve been hit by a bus. Maybe you should help them first. I can wait I’m not all that injured anyway.”

“Jace why that’s thoughtful of you. What can I help you to with? Alea? Oliver! Where’s Jess?”

“Wait you know these two?”

“Yes there the ones who saved you all. Oliver what happened up there? Oliver? Oliver?”

“Maybe ask the little girl instead?”

“Yeah. Alea sweetie are you ok? What happened?”

“Zombies. Ollie he got mad. They hurt Jess I think. He grabbed my arm and put the needle in it. It hurts!”

“Jess got bit? He injected you! Where’s Jess now then?”

“She’s dead.”

“Oliver. Are you ok?”

“She’s dead.”

“Is he ok?”

“I uh don’t know. Oliver are you ok?”

“She’s dead. She’s actually dead.”

“Ollie.”

“Alea. Don’t.”

“We have to go Jace. Make sure people get the help they need.”

“For sure. I wish you all luck. Sorry for your loss.”

“Jamie they’re back where were they? Oliver? Alea? Hey, where’s Jess?”

“Avery. She uh died in the tower. She got bit.”

“What? Where is she then? Shouldn’t she be here! You released the cure right Oliver!”

“Avery. He isn’t talking right now.”

“Why? Oliver! What happened to my sister!”

“Avery. Lets just go to the forth tower. We gotta finish what we started.”

“Okay. Then we are talking about this again.”

The 4 drove down to the tower after burying Jess. Avery wouldn’t talk or look at Oliver. Oliver wouldn’t go anywhere near Alea without flinching. He was keeping his head down at the ground and wouldn’t look at anyone. With both Avery and Oliver out of it Jamie decided to build the wall with Avery. While Oliver and Alea went to the top of the tower.

“Ollie. Are you ok?”

“Alea, I’m sorry.”

“For what Ollie?”

“I scared you didn’t I?”

“Ollie.”

“Just tell me Alea. Did I scare you?”

“Yes Ollie. Why did you act like that?”

“I shouldn’t have. I shouldn’t have injected you that was not meant to happen. I cared about Jess a lot I guess.”

”I knew that. I’m 10 not stupid. We all knew you two cared about each other.”

”Really? I thought I was pretty secretive.”

”Nope. I think she liked you.”

”You do? Thanks, Alea.”

”You’re welcome. I forgive you too.”

”Ha thanks, Alea.”

The two walk up the tower stairs and continue talking. They get to the fourth floor when they hear moans behind them.

”What was that? Alea get behind me, please.”

”Ollie. What is that noise?”

”Zombies. Alea run up!”

Just below them were about 30 zombies hurdling toward them. The two ran fast up the stairs to the fifth floor. Oliver looks behind him then turns over to Alea and grabs her hand. She turns around and he says “I’m sorry. You must run and deliver the cure. You’ve seen me do it before you know how. Go now!” Then turns toward the herd before running down and throwing himself into them like a bowling ball. They topple over like pins before getting up and attacking. Alea stunned and scared runs up the stairs and gets to the top floor. She watches behind her while she draws her blood this time. Then sends out the cure curing the last part of the world left that were zombies.

After assuring it sent out she ran down the stairs to the herd to find 30 very angry people. Helping each other while yelling at a body she assumed to be Ollie’s. She crept closer and closer dreading what she’ll see. When she finally advanced to his body there were multiple deep bite wounds. Her father had taught her how to check a pulse. To her shock he was alive and breathing. She pleaded and pleaded for the adults to help carry him down. They refused saying their lives were ruined because of this man. She tried to convince them that wasn’t true but they all walked out leaving her and him alone in the tower.

“It worked! We did it Avery!”

“Where’s Alea and Oliver they didn’t exit the building?”

“Your right they didn’t. I’ll go look around.”

Avery goes and asks a survivor “ Hey do you know what happened to the little girl and guy that went in there? Little girl has short brown curly hair with hazel eyes.”

“You actually care about those two? We left her with the guys body.”

“What? Oliver got hurt? Then left a 10 year old up there!”

Avery ran toward the tower before being called out by Jamie. “Avery where are you going!”

“Oliver got hurt and Alea’s still in the tower with him!”

“He got hurt? Why’s he still up there?”

“They wouldn’t help carry him down the stairs.”

“What? That is so wrong!”

The two busted open the doors and ran up the stairs. Jamie stood at the top of the stairs shocked by what she’s seeing. Alea crying over a lifeless Oliver and it shook her to her very core. Avery ran over and checked his pulse but felt nothing. He took off his shirt and told her to try and stop the bleeding. While Avery did chest compressions to try and save him. While the people down below were determined on them not saving him and made a barricade around the door to block it.

“Move out of the way! Now!”

“We’re not moving. That man caused all this why should we save him?”

“He saved you! He may die and he saved you!”

“He had the only cure that could save you! The least you could do is save him!”

5 minutes pass before the people slowly disperse and Avery along with help from some teens get Oliver to the hospital. The doctors take him in to repair the damage. He had many deep bite wounds and internal bleeding in the abdomen. Alea, Jamie, and Avery waited out in the lobby for hours before they came out and requested it’s best his loved ones say goodbye. Avery and Jamie send Alea inside to go and talk to Oliver.

“A...a-lea you’re here.”

“Ollie! They told me I had to come in here to talk to you. I was so scared! The people they didn’t help you!”

“Alea. Sweetie. You did good. You saved everyone.”

”So did you. You have to live.”

”I know sweetie. I know.”

”They didn’t help you. Why didn’t they help you?”

”Don’t blame them ok. They thought they were doing what’s right. You know it’s wrong but they didn’t.”

”You can’t leave me. You and I were supposed to be brave together.”

”Alea. I can’t. I can’t be brave anymore. You’ll have to be brave for both of us, ok?”

”Okay. Ollie?”

”Yes, Alea?”

”When we met I asked if you were a bad man. I have an answer. You are not a bad man. My Daddy was wrong. You are kind and nice and brave. You are a good man.”

”Thank you, Alea.’ breathes Oliver as the machine flat lines and his heartbeat disappears. Leaving a silent room with a little girl staring out a window in tears.

Now I’m well into my 30s and I can still recall the conversations I had with Ollie. Yeah, calling him Ollie never really went away. He was the father that I had lost. It upset me to lose him after we had cured the entire world. I was 10 though I hadn’t grasped the concept of death. Even while being entrapped in a world full of death. I hadn’t come to terms that if the people had reacted faster or even genuinely cared about him he would’ve lived. They thought he had caused it though so it’s not like I can blame them. He was a good man and now the rest of the world knows it too. 2 months after his passing the government admitted to creating the virus 34 years before Oliver’s birth. They admitted that Ollie’s father had worked for the president and tried to stop them. They denied his request and continued on. So he created a cure just in case it spread. He injected himself and he injected Ollie right before Teresa took him. They admitted that once they learned of the cure Thomas created they had him killed. Then when they seen Ollie’s DNA results they knew he had to be killed. So he couldn’t stop the virus. So they blamed him to cover their butts and had him executed to save the virus.

The world wanted my statement on the matter. My viewpoint on what had happened. A summary on the experience and it’s what I’ve written. I don’t think I can give it to everybody though. Only you select people reading this are allowed. Ollie was a good person and an innocent person I wouldn’t be able to tell his story. To create something just to prove he was nice to me and his friends.

When people hear Oliver Darriel Terry they smile because they know he was innocent. I’m not gonna send this to the public just so they can frown or cry when they hear his name. He lost a lot during the virus, for example, his innocence, his love, and his life.

He got his redemption though and when they hear his name I want them to smile.

This is Alea Hilton Connor saying my final statement about Oliver Terry.

He is and was a good man.
