Sam always seemed as though she was running from something or someone most of the time, we all wondered about it but didn't dare ask. She was open with her body, but she kept her secrets locked up tight and we respected that. Although some may find it odd, we all shared her and we each had our own unique relationship with her. Through Sam we were all connected. Danny had an aching soul and he hid his pain with humor. He was always making us laugh, especially Sam. At 5’8 he and Sam were the same height. He was an average looking guy and she lit up when he came around. He was very witty and sometimes he was just a clown, but Danny had a dark side and he and Sam connected with a past filled with bad addictions and trouble with the law. Getting clean was not easy for either of them and staying clean proved to be most difficult. However, together they made art and on the open road they found themselves in each other. Then there is my story. I come from a long line of criminals. My father, my uncle, even two of my brothers. I did my best to stay low on the radar but they all acted as if I was the criminal when I left my husband and fell in love with a woman. It's as if that was worse than the crimes they committed. Although I don't keep in touch with them anymore, a part of them is hidden deep inside which allows me to feel so at home with my group of misfits. I am able to put on quite a show with the acquaintances in my life. They all think that my wife and I are just an average lesbian married couple because that's what I need them to think so I could survive in suburbia hell. I don't call any of them friends because they will never know the real me. If I shared the kind of shit that runs through my head on a day to day basis, someone would have me committed. I have always had a chameleon soul and am able to blend in with any social group when necessary. So it came naturally for me to put up a facade while raising my children, all who have now left the nest. The only one who will ever know me and the darkness I hide inside is my wife. You see, she thrives off my dark side, she devours it to say the least. Alex is the quiet one in our group and only I know what she is truly capable of. It was like having our own special secret, like we were living double lives. I believe it was a Monday when we all headed out, it's hard to remember details like that after everything that has happened. It's as if my brain is a jumbled box of puzzle pieces strewn all over the place and I'm the only one left to put them back together. Although I do remember him, he joined us later that day. Mac and him had formed some strange relationship and somehow he joined our group. He was mysterious, not too tall, I just remember he was taller than me. He wore those glasses, you know the kind the cops wore, they were reflective and you could never see his eyes. It's hard to trust someone who always hides their eyes, but we all welcomed him anyway, any friend of Mac’s was a friend to us. I mean we all had our own skeletons we were hiding, so he fit right in. Story has it that he spent most of his life in prison for murder so you could understand why he intimated me. Like the rest of us, photography was his escape from his twisted life. They called him Evol or Evol_e. It was a nickname he got while in prison. I didn’t know the story behind it, but I was curious to find out. We woke up early that morning. We already packed the night before however we were supposed to meet Mac and the gang at Kevin's farm to load the RV at a quarter to eight. I hate mornings, especially when I have to be up and ready to go, but I woke up easy that day. We had talked about this trip for so long and it was finally happening and I was eager to be out on the open road. Alex and I wanted to sit on our porch swing, drink our coffee and watch the sunrise before we headed out. We cherished those moments spent in our swing, summer evenings were our favorite. The breeze would pick up and the coolest spot was on our swing. I would lay my head in her lap while she played with my hair. It was these moments where life felt normal, it was nice sometimes to pretend that bad things never happened. That would be the last time we would ever spend on our porch together. We pulled down the long dirt road that led to Kevin's farm. He lived on the outskirts of town on an old farm that used to be the happening place every October. People would come from all over every fall to see California's largest corn maze. In its prime I had heard it was quite impressive. Things kind of went downhill with the farm and Kevin's family after the accident. Looking at it now you would never have known that this place once thrived. The corn fields were all covered in weeds that were taller than me. We drove in slowly to keep the rocks from flying up and hitting the car. Alex hated that about coming out here. We pulled up and parked next to one of Kevin’s old classic cars, he was a collector. He planned on one day getting that old thing up and running, but still it sat with so much dust on it you couldn't even tell what color the paint was. It was seven thirty give or take when we arrived. There was something peaceful about the early morning air. Everything was still so quiet, the dew on the trees sparkled like little diamonds from the reflection of the early morning sun. Mac was already there, he had been staying in his RV on the farm for some time now. He already started drinking, for him it was always happy hour but he never seemed to get drunk. I believe that a stiff drink was his way of silencing the ghosts of his past. As we got out of the car I could smell something cooking. Kevin was in the kitchen and he was a damn good cook, he loved making dishes for all of us. Especially Danny, Danny would eat anything and Kevin was always creative in the kitchen so Danny spent a lot of time hanging in the kitchen with him. Thankfully that morning bacon and eggs were on the menu. My stomach was growling as soon as the scent of bacon hit my nose. I came in and sat at the table. The squeaking of the old screen door alerted Kevin and he handed me a cup of hot coffee. We exchanged a look that said good morning. Kevin knew I hated mornings, he respected that and refrained from conversation. A second later we could hear loud music and the sound of the tires crunching over the dirt and rocks. Danny. He always drove up this road like a bat outta hell. He drove an old beater and didn't care much about the rocks adding any more dents to it. Danny was always loud. I could hear him saying his hellos to Alex and Mac almost across the farm. Even though Mac knew that Danny had been clean for years he always offered him a drink, although Mac offered everyone a drink. I assume he was just being polite but the truth was he hated drinking alone. After loading our gear into the RV Alex came in and sat at the table. Kevin and her made small talk as he poured her a cup and handed us warm plates of bacon and eggs. I couldn't wait to devour it. I think I was halfway through my eggs before Alex even picked up her fork. She took her time to add extra pepper and hot sauce. I'll never understand the appeal of spicy food, to me it was pain and I didn't need anymore pain in my life. While the three of us sat at the table eating and talking about our trip Sam came through the door. Even this early in the morning she looked as though she just walked off the cover of a magazine. The sweet smell of her perfume wafted in the air, I felt like Pepe Lepew as I followed her scent as She walked around the room. She was wearing a wife beater with a black bra, one of the lacy straps had fallen off of her shoulder adding a bit more sex appeal, as if that was possible. She wore jeans that had holes in the knees, not the kinds of holes that appeared over time, but the kind you paid top dollar for in those designer shops. Her hair was long and it cascaded down her back. She wasn't wearing much makeup, she didn't need to. She was a natural beauty with the perfect olive complexion, our eyes lit up when she was around. She came in full of spunk as usual, she smacked Kevin on the ass while she grabbed a piece of bacon from the counter. She walked over and planted a soft warm kiss on Alex’s lips, then she gave me a soft kiss on my forehead. She turned the kitchen chair backwards and sat at the table eating her bacon and talking while she chewed. We didn't mind her poor manners because she looked so damn good doing it. Besides, that was Sam, she didn't care much about social norms. She did what she wanted and that is what we were all drawn to, she was fearless. We never understood why in the hell she hung around all of us, but we weren't complaining. Mac and Danny walked in shortly after Sam. Mac wreaked of alcohol, it leaked through his pores and filled the air. Mac’s skin showed the trauma of a man who spent too much time in the sun. His neck was always a bit reddish in tone like someone who drank a lot, but he was handsome in his own way. He was always wearing those hawaiian shirts with his khaki shorts and Sperry’s, or “boat shoes” we all liked call them. Mac kept a freshly trimmed military buzz cut for as long as I've known him, some things just never change. Danny came up behind Sam, grabbed the back of her hair and pulled her head back while he kissed her with an open mouth. Outside we heard a door slam, we didn't even hear the car drive up because Sam always distracted us. Evol yelled “Let's get this party started”, it had begun. He loaded up his bags before walking in the house. He let the screen door slam behind him. I jumped, I was always a little jumpy when he was around. He had a large presence, I always felt that he was physically larger than he really was, even though he only stood about 5’11”. He always had that perfect scruff of a beard, like after a couple of days not shaving it just stopped growing. His voice was deep and gravelly which always made me nervous. He wore dark dirty rugged jeans and a white t-shirt that had turned yellowish over time. His neck and arms were covered in tattoos. He always had his camera around his neck, we all loved taking pictures, but for Evol, it was something different. It's like he held onto the camera to keep him from snapping. He held onto it like a toddler holds onto their security blanket.
