Now before I show you all my favorite song on the playlist I want to ask. Do any of you have someone you look up to? Someone who is your role model? I know I have many of those in my life. Believe it or not, this playlist is dedicated to one of my most important role models. My 14yr old sister Breanna!

At 10yrs old she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Which went unknown to the family for years. It had begun like any other day would. It was September 20th, 2015 when me and my family had decided to go to a museum. Simple trips my family and I took pretty often. It quickly turned into much more than that though. Breanna who once in a while did have an attitude took a complete turn. Her attitude was relentless and never-ending. She took way too many bathroom trips for it to appear normal. She wasn't anything like my little sister.

My parents very concerned for her, by 5:00 pm looked up her behavior on Google(thanks Google!). Most possible suggestion from Google was diabetic. We rushed home because we didn't have a meter to test this theory just yet. Once we got home my Dad informed me(12 years old at this point) about what was going on. We were talking when my Mom rushed downstairs saying she was calling her Mother and they were leaving.

My sister's blood sugar levels had reached up to almost 500. My Mom scared for my sister and in a state of panic called her Mom. She, in turn, said to call the hospital to find out what to do. My family knew a little about diabetes when having past relatives have it, but not enough to know what to do in this situation.

They said to feed her dinner and then bring her to the hospital. So they did just that Breanna ate while my Grandma packed her a bag, and my Mom called her sister. Within a half hour, my sister was gone and my cousins were at my house. My Dad stayed home while my Mom, Grandma, and Aunt went to the hospital.

My sister was in the hospital for 2-4 days, and honestly, I can't explain exactly what went on during those days.

If you were to talk to my family. I'm very quiet and reserved. My Patience can exceed that of an adult. Most of all I NEVER give attitude, even as a teenager I don't. By the first day of Breanna being gone my quiet calm nature was gone. It was like you were talking to a sassy 12-year-old with an attitude problem. I was sad and wouldn't talk to anyone. My interest to do my schooling while she was in the hospital was nonexistent. Freakiest thing is I have no recollection of those three days she was gone. I don't remember even doing school, going to the zoo, or even talking to anybody.

I will say though that the day my sister walked through those front doors. The moment she started talking and even smiling as she showed us how everything worked. It felt like my entire world had just been resumed. Like it was merely a tv show someone had hit pause on for a short while.

My sister quickly caught on how her meter worked. She had our parents give her the shots for about two weeks. Until she did it all on her own. She didn't let this stop her she just kept pushing. Now she's 14yrs old and has an insulin pump and continues to fight.

My sister is much braver than I could ever be. She took diabetes head on and continues to fight. I'm decided to do this for the challenge because of the pride and love I have for my little sis.

I believe that my world would literally end without her in it. Which is why my favorite song on my playlist is.

My life Would suck without you by Kelly Clarkson!

  • That's beautiful. I have 5 sisters myself. I'm the oldest and I agree with your song choice. Keep it up.

  • First up, that is an awesome playlist! I love most of the songs in there especially my life anthem, which is "This Is Me" 😍 I am sorry that your sister has to go through the very trying struggle of diabetes. I have family members as well as friends fighting that battle so i know the struggle. As long as she watches her diet and sticks to her insulin regime, she should have it under control. Thanks for sharing this story and for giving me a closer look at who you are and what you are made of. You are a beautiful soul, Alexis 💜
