A Friend Once Said... Read Count : 42

Were you one of those kids who knew exactly what they would do in the future? Did you want to be a Doctor, a firefighter, a teacher maybe? Or were you one of those kids who dreamed to be a prince, a princess or a superhero? Did your dreams or desires fade away without a sound or notice? Did you suddenly find yourself with nothing to look forward to?

I remember once wanting to be a dancer and a chef when I was little, but that desire slowly dissipated... Later when I grew up, my parents started telling me "You should be an architect. You like drawing, don't you?" They started answering for me when someone asked what I wanted to do for a living, saying I would be an architect. Soon they changed that to "Whatever you do, make sure you have fun and enjoy it" The thing is... I had no clue what I wanted to do. I did appreciate the fact that they left the architecture thing alone, but how was I supposed to enjoy something when I didn't know what that 'something' was?

Once I had to write a senior essay, and I'll tell the truth, it overwhelmed me for a while. One of those overwhelming days, I started talking with my friend about what to write for the essay. I told my friend that I didn't know what I would study in the future, or even what college to go to. Guess what my friend said.

"That's great"

That's great? What was I supposed to do with "That's great"?

I asked my friend what those words even meant. My friend said "That's great because you have the whole world open for you. You can explore all your different options without having to stick to one. Only by exploring that open world will you find what suits you best"

Those beautiful, wise words made me realize... I didn't have to write about what I would do, but about what I was capable of doing in order to get there. I didn't need to know what I would do with my future, but what I could do with it.

What a friend once said changed my whole way of thinking about my future, and let me tell you something... As time passes by, don't worry about what you can and can't do, but about what you want to do. If you do know what you want to do with your future, and it's something you love, just go for it! If you have no idea what to do yet, then take a look at the world around you. Explore, find something you love and then pursue it.

One more thing. Don't ever, ever, try to go along with what someone tells you to do. Life is too short to waste it doing something you don't like. However, do consider it a suggestion, go explore it, you never know if you might end up liking it.
