Within the last 2 weeks, General Motors has stated that they will be making a massive layoffs of 14,000 workers before the holidays throughout the United States and Canada. Two factories in the United States are closing, and three factories are closing in Canada. They also mentioned they may be closing to factories in South Korea as well. This will come at a later time. They are not selling enough vehicles, which was the claim of the person responsible for running GM. They can't afford these vehicles, which is looked at as part of Trump's tariff plans. Trump's tariffs, particularly in steel and aluminum, have significantly raised the cost of making vehicles. Because of these costs, people are buying less vehicles off the market. They're having their old ones repaired, because they cannot afford the high costs of new vehicles. They cannot afford the loans, because wages are not high enough for a single person.

It is unfortunate that this news comes, before the holidays. There is hope though, because some of their factories which are expanding have stated that they will take in some of these workers. Unfortunately, we don't know how many of them can afford to move to these new locations. I fear if these tariffs continue, the citizens of the United States will end up seeing a large increase and the goods they purchase because of the high costs of imported aluminum and steel. It would be wise, for the United States to learn how to refine Steel and Aluminum in order to cut the costs of these high rates.
