I just saw a supposedly "heart touching" video of a love story.

The boy is poor and the girl is rich. The boy works really hard to earn enough money for the girl's  demands but it's  never enough for the girl.

So, one fine day, the girl says , " It's  not working out . I think we should break up. You're not able to meet my demands , why did you even bother trying to be together ?"

The boy cries , begs her not to leave him but like all spoiled , self-centered girls , she refuses to listen and walks away .

Then 10 years down the line , the boy and the girl cross paths again . The boy is wearing Armani . The girl asks him if he won the lottery or anything . The boy just smiles and says nothing .

Then the girl starts boasting about her husband and how he earns $1 million every year and etc etc and he has just bagged a deal with a very famous businessman and that they were going to be even more rich blah blah blah . . .

Then her husband walks from around the corner and greets the girl's ex-boyfriend by saying ,"  Sir , I didn't expect you to arrive so soon ."

He then turns to his wife and says , "This is the businessman I was  talking to you about ."

And he starts narrating to his wife the story of the big businessman's ex who dumped him just for money .

The video ends with a caption saying "Never lose a chance lest you regret later ."

So basically , what this video tried to "teach" is that we shouldn't judge someone on their income , or that we shouldn't dump our boyfriend because he's not rich , because , apparently we're going to "regret" that in the future.

What really makes me angry is that girls are always portrayed as gold-diggers and we are always the ones that end up "regretting" for not realizing that our boyfriend is gonna be a billionaire someday .

And we're  then supposed to apologize to the guy for hurting his precious ego and beg him to give us another chance.

But , my question is "Why would the girl regret leaving him if she found someone she's happy with and she doesn't need her ex anymore?"

Can't the girl be portrayed as someone who congratulates the guy on becoming successful instead of wallowing in guilt ?

And seriously , I have never actually felt any sympathy for those who break up with their boyfriends or girlfriends , and then mope around crying and making a general fool of themselves , because I have always secretly wanted to strangle them . Because while they were supposed to be focusing on stuff that actually matters in the real world , all these stupid youth are wasting all their time in playing "Romeo-Juliet" of the 21st century .

  • Hi Maryam, I'd like to share my thoughts here with you on the said video and of course, this is just my thoughts. I have not seen the video so I'm basing my thoughts on the way you had described it in your blog. First up, the end caption may not be meant as judging someone based on the size of their bank account, but more on someone's attitude towards things. Secondly, you asked why girls are portrayed as gold diggers. Fact of the matter is, it is only because there are women out there who are gold diggers. It is a sad reality of today's life. Lastly, maybe you viewed the video as a "messed up love story" but is that the real message behind the video? I don't believe so. I feel the real message in the video is about attitude and mentality and behaviour. Anyway, like i mentioned earlier, this is just my thoughts based on what you shared.
