It  arrived an hour before the family.
Twenty five pounds of succulent,
deli-prepared Turkey “ for a king”
Very appropriate for it was Karen and
Austin King celebrating their annual,
traditional Thanksgiving Feast.
The dining room table was beautifully
decorated, serving dishes neatly
placed, displaying the food to be enjoyed by the seventeen mothers ,
fathers, grandparents, children, grandchildren sisters ,cousins and
Bush, the family dog.
There was green beans, brussel sprouts ,
roasted potatoes,sweet potatoes ,
carrots , two kinds of stuffing, in-bird and potted. There was soup, salad,
bread including sister JoAnn’s famous
Corn bread.There was juices, soda,
wine and water. In the kitchen there was
Pies, cakes, cookies, fruit and an ice cream cake in the fridge.
Grandpa Terry, also in the kitchen was preparing for his traditional assignment of carving the bird. Blade in hand he began by removing the”drumsticks “, then stopped. His knife of sharpened, German Steel was unable to penatrate the golden skin.
Again and again he tried with no
results. Finally, in frustration he took a sheet of paper from the drawer and
deftly sliced it cleanly in half.Seeing the
incredible sharpness of the blade, he attacked the bird but with no avail,
nothing. That bird appeared as beautiful as when it arrived. Beautiful and unblemished. It was then, some family members “took a crack” at the bird with the same result.
A half hour later with the family
seated, passing the tray of Karen’s
usual alternative of spiral-sliced ham,
amidst the scattering conversations
and the clanking of utensils, could be heard faintly but distinctly,a sharp,
almost humorous   “GOBBLE”
