Leaving the gloom and glitter of the
Hilton Towers
I remove my name tag and am a
 “civilian “for just awhile
I walk two blocks and step into life unbridled
“Shoot The Ball-National Three Man
Basketball Tourney” reads the sign
The vibrance, the smell, the grunts Of
body contact,that metallic-rubber sound
heard only in playgrounds-I am immersed in them all, where life flows free and the heaviest thought is the fear
Of loosing a”close one”
My transformation from two thousand
grieving parents to a thousand basketball-minded young men and
women is surreal
I have walked two city blocks and entered another world
One that I knew intimately but am no
longer a part of
I am merely a visitor passing through
relishing each sight and sound and smell
Then it is time to returns to my truth
I have basked in they Chicago sun and
In the experience
As I step back onto the red plush
carpet and pin my reality on
I am back in my two worlds
And in both places my lovely son
You are with me
