Chapter One

He tweaked her nose and made her giggle. She had a crush on him and she liked it when he teased her. When you’re a kid, a five year age difference seems like such a big gap.

“If we were in our thirties, it wouldn’t even matter,” she argued her point to her friends.

Nobody understood her. Miley was mature beyond her years and the boys her age grossed her out. At thirteen none of the boys she liked ever took her serious, but Jack was different. The boy whose name she doodled in her diary accompanied by X’s and O’s, was her older brother’s best friend and was completely off limits if her brother had anything to do with it.

When Jack would come over to play video games with her brother, Miley would always wear her favorite outfit, and throw on a little bit of makeup, including her favorite light pink lip gloss, Lustful. With a name like that, he wouldn’t be able to resist her.

One afternoon she filled a plate full of fresh baked brownies, Miley took the goodies into her brother’s room where him and Jack had been spending their afternoon.

“Get out, Miley!” Preston hollered when she peeked in through the half open door.

Ignoring him, she pushed through anyway. “I’ve got brownies,” she said with a flirty Lustful smile.

“Ooh, brownies, I’ll take one,” Jack said as he held out his hand.

Miley blushed.

Jack and Preston had been friends since grade school, but it wasn’t until Miley began to fill out a bit that Jack really began to notice her. Him and Preston played Varsity football while Miley was still in middle school. She didn’t see their age difference as a big deal and hated it whenever her friends brought it up.

“Jack is different, he sees me. He knows that I am not like the other girls his age. They are all unintelligent superficial creatures anyways,” she snapped. Her friends remained quiet. It wasn’t worth opposing her. Miley was as strong as she was smart. She didn’t give a shit what anyone thought of her.

When Jack glanced her way, she melted. It was the only time she ever felt weak, weak in the knees that is. Gazing into his dark brown eyes that looked like hershey kisses, and his thick brown hair and that smile. It was that smile that she couldn’t resist. Jack had everything she could ever want in a boy. He was smart, funny, athletic and had always treated her like a person, and not just his good buddy’s little sister.

One night, Jack was staying over and they had ordered pizza, she was standing next to him with her plate in hand and he “accidentally” rubbed up against her. It sent chills rushing through her body on contact. This had to be what love felt like. She just knew that her and Jack were meant to be.

      Dear Diary,

Tonight it happened. Jack touched me and I felt an electric  sensation course through my body. I just know that was his way of showing his love for me, pulsing through his body and magically to mine. One single touch was all it took. He was mine, and I his…

Signed the future Mrs. Jack Carrington.

That night she fell asleep dreaming of her future husband.

The next morning at breakfast Miley brought up the Halloween party her parents put on every year. “Jack, will you be coming to the party this year?” Jack looked around the table, and back to Miley, he responded politely, “If that is an invitation, I wouldn’t miss it,” he said giving Miley a little wink.

“Do you have your costume planned out yet?” Miley’s mom asked.

“I want to be the girl from The Purge,”

“I love that movie,” Jack said joining the conversation.

“Me too, we should all go see the new one when it comes out,” Miley added.

“Are you even old enough to see that movie without your mommy?” Preston added.

Miley rolled her eyes, “You are so immature Preston,”

After breakfast Miley helped her mother with the dishes while the boys, including her father went out back to play football.

“Why do they always get to leave the table without helping in the kitchen? Boys are so lazy.”

MIley’s mom chuckled, “Oh sweetheart, you are years ahead of your time, on day, you will change the world.”

MIley smiled up at her mom, then looked out of the window at the kitchen sink and quietly smiled watching Jack play football.

“Mom, how old were you when you met Dad?”

“I was sixteen and he was eighteen,”

“Did Grandma and Grandpa think he was too old for you?”

“Well, yes. At first they did, but they soon got over it once they got to know him,”

Miley gave a little smile as she watched Jack toss the ball to her father.

“Why do you ask sweetie?”

“I was just curious, the boys my age are so immature,”

Her mother laughed, “Well, boys your Father's age are immature as well,”

Monday morning had snuck up on Miley as she peeled herself out of her bed and threw on some clothes.

“You better get down here quick if you want a ride to school,” Preston yelled to her from downstairs.

“I’ll be right there, gheez,” she snapped back at her brother.

A few moments later Preston and Miley were off to school. “Are you picking up Jack along the way?”

“Not today. He’s too old for you, you know that right?”

“Why don’t you leave that between Jack and I,”

“Ha, last I checked, there was no You and Jack”

“Last time I checked you were as dumb as a door knob,” she said before getting out of the car unexpectedly at the four way stop a block from her school. She slammed the door behind her and flipped her brother off without even looking back at him. She disappeared in the group of kids that were walking to school.

Miley was a popular girl in school to her dismay. She would rather slide through her classes unnoticed rather than make small pointless talk with her “friends”. She faked it just to appease her parents, so she kept her friends close to keep up appearances. Jaycee was probably the only girl she could tolerate for longer than the fifteen minute break they had between second and third period. She was weak, and Miley could control her and she was always so happy to do whatever just to stay on Miley’s good side.

“Hi Miley, how was your weekend?” Jaycee said in her typical over bubbly attitude. “It’s Monday morning Jaycee, try and tone it down a notch will ya?”  The corner of Jaycee’s mouth suddenly dropped. “Yeah, you’re right, Monday blows,” she said trying to correct her mistake to get her friend’s approval. Even though Miley used Jaycee’s weakness to her advantage, she was often annoyed by her weak personality. Miley rolled her eyes and gave a little chuckle in response and together they walked to third period.

Standing just outside the door of History, Johnna and Taylor stopped to say hi. “Hey bitches, how’s it going?” Miley looked over at her friends, gave a half smile and shoved pass them and headed into class leaving them standing there. Jaycee threw a quick glance at her other friends then followed after Miley.

Johnna and Taylor exchanged looks, then huffed and took off down the hall.

“Jaycee follows her around like a lost puppy and it's so pathetic,” Taylor announced

“It's not like any of us want to get on her bad side, but yeah, Jaycee takes it to another level,”

The last bell of the day rang and Miley slipped past all of her friends and decided to take the long way home through the woods. Being surrounded by the large trees filled her with peace and she needed some time to herself to think.

The chill of the fall air turned the tip of her nose red as the clouds of her breath trailed behind her. The deeper into the woods she got the more quiet and isolated she felt. This is something she enjoyed. The only thing she could hear was her footsteps crunching in the brush below her. It was here in this place where she would find a place to sit and write in her diary. You see, Miley was a dreamer and a planner. She enjoyed fantasizing about her life, and her undying love for Jack.

She found a tree, and took off her backpack and plopped down next to it. She wore mittens with her fingers free so she could write and still stay warm. Atop her head was a dark grey beanie covering her ears. Her long dirty blonde hair fell on her shoulders adding extra warmth. With her chipped black nail polish she picked up her pen and began to write.

     Dear Diary,

School was lame as usual. I find that I am growing less tolerant of my friends and I just wish that I could fast forward to adulthood so I don't have to deal with the immaturity of my classmates. The dream of my future with Jack is the only thing fueling my lonely existence. Nobody understands what we have. Jack is just trying to be respectful and that's why he hasn't made any moves. I think that is hopelessly romantic, don't you?

Miley glanced up when she heard the familiar sound of twigs crunching underfoot. She hurriedly packed up her diary and threw on her backpack. Peeking around the tree, she sees something that made her tremble. Frozen in fear she stood there, trying to slow her breath as to not give away her location. She heard what sounded like a struggle but refused to look until it was quiet again. Cautiously peeling open her eyes, she peered around the tree. It took everything inside her not to scream. Instead she turned the opposite direction and never looked back. Hands trembling and heart racing, she ran straight home.
