                         Chapter 3

             The Demon Face to Face

When I came to visit my family I never imagined I would be fighting to keep my family alive. Being possessed by a deadly demon was not on my list for this trip. I could feel the fear inside. That was very unusual for me. I was always the strong one. I made everything fear me. Why was this fear in me now? Am I getting weak or is this just something I cannot deal with? Was it the sight of Elizabeth as the crow feathers came out her eyes and the sound of the evil in her voice? Either way I had to get over the fear I could not let it get control of me. That's how it is winning. It's controlling my family with fear them consuming them physically and mentally. Lord only knows how many families it already taken that has made it so strong. The more I thought the angrier I got. My anger started taking over my fear. I was no longer afraid of what might happen I was ready to make something happen. I shut the book and hid it under my mattress. What now I thought. It was getting late and I still didn’t hear any noise coming from the other side of my door. Has everyone left I began to wander? I opened the door and walked through the house. There was no one home. I walked outside on the porch. The cars was all in the driveway. How could this be? There was silence all around. I sat on the top step. Chills started running through my body. Something was not right at all. All of the sudden there was a loud bang coming from the kitchen. I jumped I was so startled. I raised to my feet running to the kitchen to find out what had happened. I opened the door  and my aunt was doing dishes. She looked up with the sweetest smile. Where have you been I asked? She looked at me with bewilderment. I have been here doing the dishes sweety. No, I said. I just came through here. There was no one in here. She just froze and looked at me like I was going crazy. Are you ok she said with concern? I looked at her and in my mind I just kept thinking. Am I going crazy? I just shook my head. I suppose Im a little tired. She just turned with no expression on her face and continued washing the dishes. She began to talk again as I sat down at the kitchen table. I talked to Elizabeth today she apologizes for leaving so abruptly she wasn't feeling well. I just looked at her in awe. Had I been the only one saw the crows wings coming out of her eyes and heard the evil tone and warning in her voice? I put my hands on my head. I don’t know how much more of this I could take. This is evil is making us all feel like we are going crazy. We are even looking like we are going crazy to each other. If something isn’t done soon we are all going to end up turning against each other. I raised my head and said I am so glad you and her talked. I do hope she gets to feeling better soon. I do to Nancy said as she still had her mind on the dishes. I am going to my room to rest for a while. She turned and looked at me with a very evil smile on her face and turned back towards the sink. Shivers ran all over my body. I just shook my head and walked to the room and set on the bed. The door opened and Nathan walked in. My head was in my hands I looked up. He asked are you ok? I looked at him in his eyes. Just as sweet and normal as usual. Yes, how are you doing? Great he said coming to see if you would like to come out and play in the pond with us? Sure Id love too. Let me change. He closed the door and all I could think was maybe I really am going crazy and it's all in my mind.

I got myself together and went outside. We all had the best time ever. The sun was beautiful with a cool breeze in the air.  Everyone was acting normal. We played in the water. Nathan and Jeremiah was splashing Jessica and Stacy. You could hear there giggles. I ran and yelled cannon ball as I jumped in the water and splashed water everywhere. Nancy was getting the pic-nic lunch ready. I could smell the fried chicken she had made. We got out of the water drying off. A wooden pic-nic table sat by the pond. There was chicken, potato salad, sweet tea and watermelon. I could not wait to start eating I was so hungry. Nancy hollered at my uncle Kibe who was at the other side of the pond fishing. He walked over laying his fishing supplies by the tree. Nathan looked at him, did you catch anything dad? He looked at Nathan and said how can anyone catch a fish with all that splashing and noise going on he said with a laugh. We all started laughing. The food was delicious. We ate until we felt stuffed. The boys got up and all went fishing. We helped Aunt Nancy clean up. We all chatted for a while and the girls decided to go back swimming. Would you like to go with us Sylissa the girls asked. No I replied. I am just going to sit back and enjoy this beautiful weather.   Leaning back against a tree, I closed my eyes and let my imagination take over. There was no one around me. I was laying on the beach. The clean crisp air blowing in my face. The sounds of the waves hitting the shore. It was so peaceful no stress at all. Suddenly I was startled by some loud laughter. Elizabeth had came over and was just as friendly as she could be. Her and Aunt Nancy was laughing so loud I knew they must have been gossiping about someone. Elizabeth saw me looking at them and invited me to come over and talk to them. I walked over and sat down. So Sylissa, she asked, how has your visit been. Many thoughts ran through my head at that moment. In my mind I could hear myself saying oh it’s been a crazy demon. My family and their friends being possessed by a demon. The demon is also controlling my dreams. Then I quickly snapped out of my thoughts. It has been the best visit everyone has been so nice and I have had the best time. She said that is so wonderful. We started chatting about old times and recent events around town. Soon demons and fear was out of my mind. The love of family and friends had taken over. It was the most perfect evening I had in a long time. It was getting late so we all decided to head back to the house hesitantly.

I got cleaned up. Everyone was off doing their own thing. I was walking from the bathroom towards my room in the hall and there was a bookcase. I had never really paid any attention to it, but it had caught my eye this time. There was some picture albums on the bottom shelf. I pulled out and old album that had pink flowers all over it. I don’t know why I was drawn to that one. I took it to my room and sat on my bed. Opening the book there was very old pictures. They are black and white and faded somewhat. They are pictures of my Aunt Nancy at my age. She was so beautiful. She had long black hair that went all the way down her back. She was wearing a low cut shirt tied in the front with daisy duke shorts. Her sandals had long strings that tied all the way up her legs. I turned the pages and there are pictures of her beside old cars and with her friends. I turned the page again and there was a picture of her and a girl standing in front of an old cave. Behind them you could see a shadow. I could not make out the form but I knew there was something in the background. I began wondering where that cave was and why they was there.I was afraid to ask Nance about it after what had happened earlier. I do not want to upset Aunt Nancy again. Maybe If I could find out who the lady was in the picture. I looked through more pictures but there was no others that I could find at the cave. I heard a knock at the door.I took the picture out of the book and put it under my mattress with the book. Come in I said. The door cracked open. It was Sara. Hey she said may I come in? Yes I said and patted my bed for her to come and sit with me. She sat down on the bed. I hope you are liking your stay here she said. She always had the sweetest most innocent look on her face. I am I said. She looked down and saw the picture album. I love looking at pictures she said. We flipped through the pages. I kept trying to think of a way to bring up Aunt Nancy’s old friends or the cave but nothing was coming to my mind. I would love to go hiking sometime I said. She looked at me with excitement on her face. I love hiking she said. We could make it a girls trip. I would love that I said. Jeremiah has gone to bed but tomorrow I will find out where the best place would be. Maybe there is a place where there would be a cave or something we can explore. Hmmm, she looked at me puzzled. I can’t think of any place but I’m sure the boys will know. Excellent I said. She yawned and said well I am going to go to bed. Goodnight I said and gave her a hug. I walked behind her to the hall carrying the picture album. Putting it back I looked at the other books on the shelf. There was a book about the history of Granite. I thumbed through it but nothing caught my eye. Maybe there wasn’t much of a history in this town. There had to be something though. I put the book back on the shelf. Maybe it wasn’t the history of the town or the cave. Maybe it has something to do with our family history. So many things was going through my mind. I wanted to figure it out. I kept telling myself patience is all I need. It was easier said than done for me though. I went back to the room and lied down. Everything was running through my mind.

Night time came I was so tired I went to bed early. I layed in my bed the moonlight the only light shining through the window on me. Suddenly I started shivering cold. Wow it must be getting really chilly outside. I pulled the blankets more around me but noticed I could see my breath in the moonlight.I decided to get up and make sure the window was closed. Placing my hand against the glass I knew the window was shut. I looked all around the room. I could feel the presence of something. It was way to warm to be able to see my breath. I heard the flapping of wings. I looked around nothing but darkness in the corners. The sound of the wings was all around me now. I was hoping it was just my imagination.  I layed back down in the bed and covered myself back up. Then I heard it, the evil voice sending chills up my spine. " Are you looking for me". I could not speak a word I was froze in fear. Out of the darkness came a shadow even darker than the darkness. The outline of a cloak like a reaper was coming towards me. Two blood red eyes shaped like the eyes of the crow shined out from the hood. Well, it screamed and laughed a horrible laugh.I raised up in bed trying to fight my fear and face the evil, It stopped and began to talk. I have been following you. I am always around you. You cannot escape me.You think your books will tell you about me? You think your books know anything about me that will help you defeat me? With an even louder laugh in a split second his face was at mine. The smell of death on his breath as he said. You will get your chance to face me and defeat me. I could tell there was no fear in his voice of that ever happening .Fear ran all through my body but I did not back down. As I opened my mouth to respond he disappeared. I sat up in bed my heart pounding. I didn't know what to think. I looked all around me for any signs that he was still around but nothing. He was getting into my mind. He knew my plans. I played back and meditated on everything that had happened. I knew what I must do. The mind is how he is controlling everyone. I needed to block him from my thoughts. Put a wall up. I needed to put the fear in him for once. That's his strength people's fear. He needed that control and I had given it to him tonight. No more ever. I pulled out my book. I needed to find out as much as I could about the crow demon. I know how to start also. Looking through the book I searched for the creation of the creature. I could not find anything about it. For the rest of the night I lay there getting together my plan for finding out how this evil had been creating. I needed to start from the beginning.

All at once I was back on the beach. I could hear the waves again. I could feel the soft cool sand below my body. The warm sun shining down on my face. Then I could hear chatter from all around me. I looked around but I could not see anyone. I stood up and began walking. I was curious about who was with me. All around me was nothing but beach and ocean. No where for anyone to hide. Suddenly the chatter stopped. I looked down and the sand below my feet had turned black. I reached down and picked up a handful. It ran through my fingers like normal sand. For some reason I did not feel like it was odd that the sand turning black. I looked up and the sun had disappeared. The sky on the horizon had turned black with a hazy gray look swirling all around it. I wrapped my arms around my body. What was going on? I just stood there looking in awe at what was going on around me. Suddenly the ocean was getting darker and darker. I walked up to the edge and put my hands in it cupping the water. The ocean had turned into blood. I opened my hands the blood falling back into the ocean. I looked at my hands and horror came over me. My hands were bloodstained. I fell backwards onto the black sand. What is happening, I cried out? I looked up slowly towards the water. Suddenly there was an black image appearing out of the water. As it got closer I could see the shape of it was the shape of the demon. It was looking down as it walked towards me. I could only see a cloak no facial features. I froze in fear. It got just up to where I was and looked up. It was the eyes of the crowe. They were red as blood. I heard the sound of something landing on the ground behind me. Then another and another. I slowly looked back. It was crowes. They started cawing so loudly that I had to hold my ears. The sound was hurting my head. They was all around me. I put my head down on my knees and cried. Please make it go away. The sound around me just stopped. I looked up just darkness. I jumped up and started running. I was soon at a ledge. I had nowhere to go. Turning there stood the demon. Please no I begged. What do you want? He just looked at me the blood red eyes burning a hole into my soul. He raised his hands and and crows started flying towards me. I could feel their sharp beaks piercing my skin. I was fighting them trying to get them off me. The next thing I knew I had backed to the ledge and was falling into the darkness of nothing. Hitting the floor I raised up screaming. Looking around I was in awe. I was lying on the floor beside my bed. The morning sun shining through the window on me. I had fallen out of bed. It was just a nightmare. I sat there and started sobbing so hard it made my chest hurt. It was getting harder and harder for me to be strong. Beside me laid the book. I remembered what I had been looking for before I fell asleep. I needed to find out how this evil was created. Suddenly my tears of fear turned to anger.
