           Chapter 2 What Is It?

I was frozen in fear. I could still hear the blood curdling scream but nothing could prepare me for what I saw. Staring through the door of Nathans bedroom was like looking at the at a horror scene in a movie. I kept telling myself, "this can't be real, I need to wake up!" There was blood all over the sheets and bed covers. Jessica's hands and body was covered in blood. Her mouth was dripping blood down the sides. In her hand she held a black crow. The crow was lifeless. It head was ripped off and it looked  as if She had been drinking the blood straight out of its body. She had a blank look on her face as if she was not in this world anymore. Her black eyes would go through you. But yet a very evil smile was plastered on her face. A smile of pure satisfaction. Why would she just kill a crowe? What kind of sick satisfaction could that give to her? She started repeating it won't fly anymore. Nancy opened the window and took the crow from Jessica's hands. As Nancy took the crow to throw it out the window Jessica's eyes never left her. Her evil smile turned into anger. It was a look as if her child had been snatched from her hands. I was beginning to feel very uneasy afraid Jessica was going to do something to Nancy. Nancy shut the window cautiously and walked back to the bed. I will help Nathan get her to the shower and you can get the bed cleaned up, I said to Nancy. She nodded in agreement. I wrapped my arm in her arm and gently brought her to her feet. She had no control over her body. She acted as if I was leading a zombie into the bathroom. Nathan took over. I could see the worry on his face but yet he said nothing. I shut the door behind me as he started undressing her. Walking towards the room I could see a trash bag where Nancy had threw away the bedding covered in blood. She was leaned over the bed scrubbing the mattress. What happened aunt Nancy? She looked up at me, the first time I ever saw her being weak. There were tears in her eyes as she said, something evil. That's all she would say. She got up and I helped her but the sheets and blankets on the bed. The silence between us was nerve racking. Then Nancy walked past me. Nathan and Jessica was in the door. Nancy helped lead her to the bed and cover her up. Is there anything I can do to help? I asked Nathan. Nancy stood up and said No you can go on to the living room. Sadness fell all over me. As I was walking to the living room I couldn't help but wonder if Nancy thought I had something to do with what was happening. I could hear Nancy speaking to Nathan, how did a crow get into the room?No windows were open. There was no way. I don't know mom, none of this is making any sense to me. I listened closely to see if my name was mentioned but it wasn't. They both walked into the living room and sat down quietly. Jeremiah walked in. He also looked pale his eyes black. I looked at Stacy, is he ok. In her sweet voice she said I don't know. He just got quiet and had a blank stare on His face. I got up to help her lead him to His room. We took him in and laid him on His bed. Are you ok Jeremiah, I asked? He just looked straight ahead and didn't speak. I could see the worry in Stacy's eyes. She looked at me and said I hope nothing is going around. I just shook my head and said it's all going to be ok. I looked at Jeremiah then back at Stacy and said I'm going to go in here and let you two rest. She stood up and hugged me. Thank you sylissa I'm happy you are here. I hugged her back and told her thank you.  I walked back into the living room. I am going to go to bed I told Nancy. She just nodded. Nathan said I hope you have a goodnight. Thank you I said and walked into my room. Laying in my bed I could see the soft moonlight shining into my room. The events of the day running through my mind. Then I see Aunt Nancy's face in my mind. Does she think this is my fault. My eyes filled with tears. I closed my eyes and started dozing off. Suddenly I was standing in pure darkness. All around me I could hear crows. I tried to scream but nothing came out of my mouth. I fell down to my knees my face in my hands. All I could think was please get me away from here. I opened my eyes and I was face to face with two blood red crow eyes staring at me. All at once the crow let out a loud scream and I sat up in my bed screaming. I looked around. Where am I? My heart was flying and sweat was pouring from my face and body. When I realized I was in my room I layed back down very relieved. It had only been a dream. I could not sleep rest of the night afraid of the next dream I might have. The next morning Nancy was fixing breakfast. Her homemade breakfast always smelled so good. Biscuits, gravy, eggs, and bacon. I was so hungry. I sat down at the kitchen table and I could hear a saw outside. I knew Uncle Kibe was outside working with wood building something. I asked Nancy if she needed help when Jeremiah walked into the kitchen. He looked me directly in the eyes. I knew I had seen this look before. I was looking into the eyes of the crow I had seen in my dreams last night. At first I felt fear but it turned into rage quickly. There was no way I would let this evil destroy my family. I asked as calmly and politely as I could, Jeremiah would you like to sit down? With no emotion he pulled out the seat and sat beside me. Nancy didn't even acknowledge he had walked into the room. I heard Kibe from outside holler, Nancy please come help me. Nancy took the skillet off the eye and wiped her hands on a towel. Turning around she walked behind us out the door mumbling something. I could not make out what she was saying but I could tell it wasn't very nice. I heard the screen door slam and then there was silence. Jeremiah's head slowly turned towards me. Did you sleep well a deep dark voice said. I looked up at him with anger in my eyes. His mouth curved in an evil grin that sent shivers all through my body. I shook it off I was not going to let whatever it was control me. I answered with the calmest voice I could, yes I did. He let out a snicker. You can't fool me He said. What do bird.. mean I replied. I visited you in your sleep last night. I gasped in fear. Everything from the dream came back to me last night. I could no longer play this game. Why are you here I asked? He said you know. I looked at it puzzled. No, I don't know. Jeremiah's head went down looking at the table. When he raised his head it was Jeremiah. The crow was gone but where. Jeremiah looked around where am I? I felt my mouth go dry. I gulped then smiled and said your in the kitchen getting ready for breakfast. You could see this confusion on his face but he didn't say anything else. I got up and went to the stove finishing the breakfast. Stacy walked in and kissed Jeremiah. Good morning honey are you feeling better? Yes he said still with confusion on his face. Nancy and Kibe walked back in. Nancy grabbed the skillet from me you are our guest she said. Kibe laughed she loves to do the cooking. Nancy laughed ok go get washed up or you want get any of my cooking. At that moment Nathan and Jessica walked into the room. Nathan kissed Nancy on the cheek. Jessica sat at the table twirling her hair. Everyone sit down Nancy said breakfast is ready. Everything seemed back to normal. Everyone was stuffed from the wonderful breakfast. You could hear normal chatter and laughter all around the table. I told Nancy and kibe to go take a break, I would clean up the kitchen. Everyone went there separate ways. I was finishing up the dishes when I heard a knock on the backdoor. Wiping my hands on a towel I went to answer the door. It was Elizabeth. Her head raised and there was the crow eyes staring back at me once again. I stumbled backwards catching myself on the kitchen chair. I was so stunned I couldn't speak. Surprised to see me she said with a low voice? The smile across her mouth sent goosebumps up my spine. What do You want I demanded!!!! The laughter that came from her mouth echoed through the kitchen. You are the reason I'm here! I still don't understand why me? As Elizabeth slowly stepped closer to me I backed up. My eyes never left her as I was reaching for something anything to use as protection. Then her eyes widened and crow feathers started coming out of her eyes. It was the most horrible sight I had ever beheld. Then a voice came from the living room coming towards the kitchen. Sylissa do you need any help? Elizabeth turned around as Nancy walked in. Elizabeth, Nancy said in surprise. I didn't know you were here. Elizabeth turned around. She had a look of bewilderment on her face. She started stuttering. I interrupted her. Elizabeth was just coming by to say hey. She looked at me as if I had lost my mind. Then she shook her head and said yes and sat down at the kitchen table. I sat down beside her. Nancy brought her a cup of tea and also sat down at the table. That was a funny joke you played on us the other day. Elizabeth looked at Nancy unsure of what she was talking about. What Joke? I could hear the evil laughter ringing in my head. How has this evil got such control over me? Nancy's voice woke me from my thoughts. The other day you acted like you was a zombie. You wouldn't even speak to my niece when I introduced you. She looked at Nancy like she was going mad. Nancy honey this is the first time I've met this young lady. Nancy laughed again, Elizabeth you are so funny. I spoke up. Elizabeth my name is sylissa. She never cracked a smile. She placed her cup down and said well I must be leaving right now and showed herself out. Nancy looked at me. She is such a kidder. I took Nancy's hands in mine and softly spoke. Nancy, whatever took over Jessica and made her kill that crow is what was inside Elizabeth. Nancy jerked her hands from me and stood up. You will speak of no such thing in my house hold. There has never been or will there ever be evil in my home. What about the crow I asked. Jessica tried to save that poor bir It was probably injured by a wild animal. I looked at her speechless. Was everybody in this house going crazy?  The subject is closed Nancy said then she stormed off. I walked onto the porch and sat watching the beauty of the mountains . I know I'm not going crazy. The more I sat there thinking the more worried I got. My uncle kibe walked up on the porch. What's wrong sweety? I sat there debating whether to tell him or not. I looked into his concerned eyes. Have you noticed anything unusual going on with everyone? Yes he said but I just keep it to myself. Why I asked? When your aunt Nancy was younger she had a horrible experience with something evil. She don't like to talk about it because of fear. I understand. He put his arm around me. Don't worry. He walked inside. I decided to go on a walk. There was an old path behind the house. It was so peaceful walking in the cool breeze listening to the birds singing a beautiful song. The evening air was so relieving. The longer I walked the less I was in this world , the more I'm in my world. Suddenly from the corner of my eye I saw movement from deep in the woods. I blinked my eyes to make sure I was actually seeing something. There was nothing there. Wow my imagination is really getting to me. I walked a few more steps and I heard rustling in the forest. I froze in fear. All the sounds around me had stopped. Darkness was covering me quickly. Fear left and adrenaline kicked in. I turned and before I could think I was running home. I could feel that there was something close behind me. I reached the front of the house and collapsed. Sweat running down my face and my side throbbing in pain I closed my eyes and prayed. I could hear the footsteps behind me. I felt cold hands grab my arm so I started screaming and thrashing my arms and legs as hard as I could. My eyes opened and I saw uncle kibe backing up. I could see the fear and concern on his face. I fell to his feet sobbing uncontrollably. Kibe grabbed me and held me. What's wrong honey. I could barely speak from crying so hard. It's after me. No matter where I go or what I do. It has even taken over my dreams. I can't get away. He held me near. I was so afraid this would happen. You are so much like your aunt. Your spirit is open to all kinds of entities. This land is also full of memories. There is so much energy here it's helping give energy to the evil. I just cried harder. Kibe walked me in the house and to my room. Lay down and get you some rest. As I laid down I cried so hard I was asleep in no time.

I got up the next morning. If I had any dreams I didn't remember them. I felt so rested. I got up and went into the kitchen. Nancy was cooking breakfast. Would you like to eat something she asked. No thank you. I am going to walk to town. Please be careful she said. The awkwardness was over. We were both going to let the events of the day before be forgotten which was fine with me. The walk to town was beautiful. There is some really old shops through town with some beautiful antiques. I walked up to an old book store. Walking in there was an old man standing behind the counter. He looked up above his glasses which was sitting on the tip of his nose. He gave me a smile and asked can I help you? No I replied. I'm just browsing, thank you though. He continued skimming through an old book. I walked through the aisles running my fingers across the books. I did not know what I was looking for but I knew something had drawn me into this store. In the back of the store there was this really dark corner. It looked as if no one had been back here in years. I walked straight to a book that caught my attention. It was a black leather book with gold calligraphy writing on it. The title was "Demons" there was other writing on it which I believe was Latin. Of course I could not read Latin. Skimming through the book I saw a picture of a crow. I shut the book and made my way to the counter. I would like to buy this I said. He looked at it very odd. I don't remember ever seeing this book. He put it in a bag and said five dollars. I gave him the money and walked out. Walking home I could feel myself wanting to look at the book. It's like it was calling me. I get to the house there was No one around. I walked to my room and shut the door. Sitting on my bed, I pulled the book out. I could feel a nervous feeling in my stomach. I opened the book. It opened directly to the page with the picture of the crow. I looked at the picture and the crow eyes was looking back at me. They had me in a trance. I shook my head waking myself from whatever was trying to take over. Below the picture was more writing in Latin. The top of the page said "The Demon Crow". Beware of the Demon from the dark. I could feel shivers up my spine. This demon is extremely cunning as a crow. It thrives off people killing them from the inside out. They possess a person taking full control of them and using there vessel to torment others. I read further. There was nothing that would tell how to fight this demon. I laid the book on the bed and stared at the picture. I soon realized it hadn't possessed me. Why? I wandered. It has definitely tormented me but only through other people. I started thinking about what my uncle had said about my aunt and the evil. Obviously she had defeated it years ago and he said I am just like her. The only way to fight something is to gain control of it. The crow knows I will not fight my family. I have two options to fight it in my dreams or somehow tempt it to possess me. I could feel the fear overcoming me but I knew I had to be strong.

  • Great but my entry is for a different reason. You mentioned about losing your family in Maurice comment, I felt bad and realised life is tough. Anyhow after looking at your writing talent, I felt it can help you forget those incidents to some extent, so keep writing and forget your loneliness.
