I have kept The Book hidden for over twenty years. I knew that if it was ever found it would be destroyed just like all of the other books like it. I couldn't let that happen, not to this book. That's because The Book isn't just any old book, it is unique, it is magical, it is alive, and that's why you are trying to destroy it.

So I kept The Book hidden among the many books in my huge library. Thankfully only sentient books are destroyed and this book can disguise itself so that it looks just like a normal book. That disguise has saved it from being destroyed countless amounts of times.

The Book holds seemingly endless knowledge over practically every topic but it is especially knowledgeable in the magic arts, another reason why every single sentient magical book has been destroyed, the practice of magic of any kind was outlawed at about the same time as the books. The Book has taught me many of the things that are held within it's pages, magic mostly, I have learned how to summon forth fireballs or light candles, I have learned how to disguise myself or even change my form entirely, I have learned how to heal myself and others from most injuries and infections as well as cure poison, I have learned how to live on less food and water through magic, I have learned how to conduct rituals of many kinds, and I have learned how to create magic items of my own. But most of all I have learned how to keep all of this from others, to not tell anyone not even my own flesh and blood, to never trust anyone even if you suspect that they are also wielders of magic, and to keep a distance from those who are particularly nosy. Nowadays The Book is my only real friend, it is my advisor, my confident, my teacher, and the one who brightens my darkest days. I spent almost all of my private time in communion with The Book for it is the only thing that can really understand me.

The Book and I had been having a great time over these last twenty or so years until He came. He is the one in charge of all the people who go around looking for magical things and apparently he had heard some rumors about me possibly knowing magic and so he decided to check it out for himself. He burst through my front door near where I had been sitting in a magic circle working on a ritual designed to strengthen my focus because I had been feeling a little out of it lately. Of course I didn't have time to hide the evidence of my little ritual and so he caught me and The Book red handed. I remember that he had forcefully yanked me from the ground and yanked The Book from my grasp. Then he dragged me and The Book out and to the waiting carriage where he flung us inside, got in himself, slammed the door shut, and told his driver to get us to the special prison for magic as quickly as possible. Of course I tried to fight him but it turned out that the carriage had been specially built for magic too, figures.

And now here The Book and I am, standing on trial for the so called crimes we have commited as you very well know judge, but I tell you that what we have done has not hurt any innocent being or done anything vile. I tell you judge that not all magic is as evil as you all claim and that we should be set free for we have done nothing truly wrong.

  • if you were the judge what would you decide to do with the main character? keep in mind that you have been taught for the last 20+ years that all magic is evil.
