To my parents my name means their first born—their first challenge. To my friends, my name means shy, smart, and special. My name is one of the most important decisions of my life, although, it was chosen for me.

My name is my own. No one else in my family has my name—that doesn’t mean i’m the only person with this name. I could live my whole life not being the only Starr on Earth.

I’m not sure where my name came from or what it really means. I just know that my parents liked it and now my name is like a sticky note, stuck to my shoe—hard to get rid of, easy to get used to.

My name sounds different every time someone says it. When my parents are mad, my name is angry and filled with disappointment. When my parents are happy, my name is joyful and overflowing with excitement. If my friends say my name, it sounds like laughter and loyalty. My name can feel happy, sad, or angry— as long as it is being used, it feels proud.

My name is my raincoat during a storm. It is the sunshine that brightens up my day. A shimmer of light in a dark room. My name is what makes me special. It is a ray of uniqueness that separates me from reality. I would never want to change my name. My name is me.
