You act as if nothing happened
Like you didn’t do anything wrong
Because you can’t imagine the things
My Mother had to go through

She had to explain to two young kids
One of 5 years
One of 3 years
That there Father didn’t want to see them

She had to go through every question we had
Why did you leave?
Why don’t you want to see us?

She had to guide us all alone
We didn’t have a father figure
We were surrounded
By all girls

She had to learn to trust another male
Not only for herself
But because of her kids
And the previous damage that was already caused

She had to explain to her kids
What having a step father meant
What having half siblings meant
And what or if there was any difference at all

She had to go through
Every time we would silently
Walk to our rooms after a birthday party
Because you had failed to show up

She had to sit there
While we pondered every question we could
With her knowing
That she didn’t have a single answer

She felt like she had
To keep your wishes
Of merry Christmas
Secret as not to spoil the jolly mood

She felt as though
She had to tell you every day
For ten years
To come see your kids

That you were invited to see your kids
That nobody was stopping you
Not her, not her husband
Not her family, not her friends

She had to take care of two kids
Who didn’t understand why
Five years of their life
They had a father

And then one day
They wake up
And they just don’t

And despite all the things my mothers endured
You still act as if nothing happened
And that no pain was caused
