Dear teacher

You don’t know this but in a way you had not only helped me understand the fundamentals of English but, you also helped me understand myself. When I entered your classroom I was completely insecure and I felt things that I didnt understand. I had pain but didn’t know what to do to get rid of it. I had tried talking to other people I tried to just forget it existed. It isn’t possible to forget it exists though so going into the school year I was dreading it. I thought when the year was over I’d still have an unsettled pain that couldn’t be stopped. It all changed that year and all because of you. I’m aware assignments are mandatory and you weren’t trying to help a confused pained student but you did. Weekly you’d assign us a journal entry just 5 short sentences. Write about where we see ourselves in 20 years. Deciphering the meaning we got from a particular song. Even writing our own good and bad day.

That was the very first time I had even picked up a pencil to write something that wasn’t math or science homework. That’s the first time I was able to openly write. Whenever a time for a journal entry would come I’d be talking about it for three days straight. I loved writing them and I never wanted to stop writing them.

Let alone the comments I’d receive from you. “You have such great skill Lexi!” “Such a kind heart.” They made me so happy and I’d have a huge smile every time I read them.

Then you had introduced the poetry section. You taught us everything there was too know about poetry. I hadn’t heard much about it at that time. I knew it existed but I never looked further into it. You had us write our very own poems and it was like I could finally understand. I had finally found a way to describe my pain in a way simply talking I couldn’t.

I’m so grateful to you because with your kind words and writing opportunities I finally can just be happy.

I’m thankful for you so much

                                                      Sincerely
                                               Alexis Bryan
