In the dead of night, when old women call for peace from a life that's been lived. I answer, "I, Death, Reaper of souls, shall grant you peace." And they come with me.

In a hospital bed, when old men say their goodbyes, and except that life has come to an end, I come. "I, Death, Reaper of souls, come to end your life." And they come with me.

In the middle of a war, when a soldier cries out and prays for his children, I approach. "I, Death, Reaper of souls, promise your children shall live." And he comes with me.

In the emergency room, where a new mother drifts to sleep, wishing her baby to live, I lay next to her. "I, Death, Reaper of souls, take your life, so your daughter knows you loved her." And she comes away with me.

When a gun fires, as a man jumps in front of his girlfriend so that she and their baby will not die today, I sit next to him. "I, Death, Reaper of souls, will not only take your soul but also the soul of the man with the gun." And he comes away with me.

In a teenagers bedroom, when life seems too hard, and they ask for passage with a razor, I step in. "I, Death, Reaper of souls, do not grant you passage. You are still young, and the life ahead is full of good times. You may not see it now, but I do. Your depression passes. You live a wonderful life. You have people who love you, and children to call your own. If you leave now, one less person finds their true love. Your family has to bear a loss, and three beautiful, smart, amazing children, never come to be. Are you willing to be greedy and ruin others lives because you can't handle yours? Are you willing to forget all everyone has done for you or will do for you?"

He bows his head in shame. "No, I guess not." He cries. And I leave alone.

Because I, Death, Reaper if souls, do not know just how you die, but how you live, and the good things in your life.

To acknowledge a sunny day, you must have a rainy day before it. Otherwise, you're too small minded to notice anything other than yourself.
