To my mirror

I used to be afraid of you,

avoiding your gaze day in and out.

I would swear I was through

If we ever connected in a moment.

A monster who did me no justice,

Always happy to scream out my imperfections.

Every morning I was so anxious

Getting dressed to face life lessons.

My teeth were crooked more than I liked.

I resembled the man that gave no pride.

I was too “malnourished” to fight

The kids who said my head looked like a slip and slide.

Oh, how I hated you for showing me who I was,

In all my glory buried behind years of pain.

I used stand in front of you and see blood

Now all I see is a friend.
