ADDICTION - A DISEASE OR CHOICE? Read Count : 103

Addiction isn't a disease, it's a choice. A disease isn't a choice, it is however, an illness that knocks on your back door and says "Suprise! You're fucked now." There are no options when you're diagnosed with a legitimate disease. You can't just say no to cancer or any other terminal disease. That is my opinion but not necessarily a fact from another view point.

When an addict picks up a drug for the very first time, they have the capability to take it or leave it. Most of us our sensible enough to know the difference between right from wrong, and comprehend yes and no. And with that being said, some of us just go and fuck up anyway. That was me for a vast majority of my adult life.

Now I do believe that mental health goes hand in hand with the choice of addiction. It plays a big role in the way we think, the decisions we make, along with the actions we take. Issues like ADHD - impulse control and rational thinking is out the window because we tend to act out before putting a sufficient thought into place and before you know it, opps, you're addicted to heroin or cocaine, or whatever your drug of choice may be. Then there's the most common, depression and anxiety. If it goes off balance and untreated for a long time (And I've seen this happen to several individuals on many different occasions) people tend to become unhappy or in panic mode and take it upon themselves to control it by self-medicating. Once that is all said and done, the individual is dependent on prescription drugs. I could go on and on and on.

Something as simple as a slight chemical imbalance in the brain (which is considered a legitimate disease) is enough to throw a barrier in one's thoughts, making it difficult to choose the most rational action. And that's why I say that addiction is not a disease, but a choice. But I will say this much, when one makes the choice to start abusing drugs, they normally have at least one mental health diagnosis, if not more.

Once the addiction takes off it amplifies the mental health disorders. Two complex problems that go hand in hand together. And if they are not treated in a correct manner by a healthcare professional, that could become a  holy hell hot mess in no time.

QUESTION:

I have my first draft finished for my  first book I plan on writing by the way. Has anyone ever had a manuscript published? If so, could you please share some feedback  and let me know the least complex way you had it published?  Greatly appreciate it.
