April had finally made it to the town. It was big. Bigger than theirs, which would make it harder to find information about Audrey. But first, she had to check on her. Thankfully, she had a signal and was able to call William.
"Hey Will! I finally made it."
"Really? Well, congradulations on completing the first part of your journey."
"Yep, it was pretty tiring. How is everything back home? How's Audrey?"
"Um, Audrey's fine, but April.....another murder occured."
"What? Who?"
"Ms. Conrad. I believe you already know her."
"But...but why? Do you know who it is?"
"Not yet, but based on how Conrad let the person in and was tortured we suspect it's someone who must have been close to her, or at least someone she knew."
"Does L know about this?"
"I was just on my way to tell him, and before you ask, no. I don't think it was him."
"Of course it wasn't him! Why...do people suspect him?"
"No, but I don't think it'll stop here, and eventually, people are gonna start pointing fingers."
"Will, I'm so sorry. I should be there for you and Audrey."
"April, we're fine. You need to do this, not just for you, but for Audrey too. Okay? Don't worry about us."
"Okay. I better get going again."
"See you soon. I'll call you if anything comes up." April hanged up and sighed. She had been gone for just a day and things were already spiraling out of control.
Putting her phone in her backpack, she climbed out of her car and looked around. It was sunny and she had parked outside the hotel she would be staying at. People walked to and fro, some giving her curious looks, probably not used to seeing much visitors.
She sighed once again and started to walk down the slightly crowded streets. It took her a while but she finally found a pleasent looking bar just two blocks from her car.
Not wanting to draw attention to herself, April quietly slipped inside and sat at the bar table, pulling her hat down more to cover her face a little. Just a few moments later a middle- aged woman approached her, smiling widely.
"Hi there! My name is Margaret but you can call me Marge, everyone does. Anything I can get you?"
"Um, actually, I was looking for directions."
"New to town? I don't recall seeing you around."
"Just visiting. And do you live in this town?"
"Lived here my whole life. Almost had to move since the incident with...." Marge trailed off, her eyes starting to fill up slightly with tears before she shook her head and smiled again.
"Nevermind that. At least let me get you a glass of water dear." And she turned to walk into the back kitchen. April sat there for a moment, unsure of what to do before a commotion from behind distracted her.
"Monroe, for the last time, I almost have the money just give me a bit more time."
"It's been three years Carl! Three! If I didn't know any better I would say you're trying to save money just to run away!"
"You...you know I wouldn't do that. I don't run away."
"Well, it's what your brother did." And at that moment the real fight began. It was bad and April had no choice but to break it up before someone else got hurt.
"Hey! Cut it out!" She yelled, getting up to seperate them. It worked, especially since Marge came to send assistance and their fight ended a couple seconds later.
"Three days Carl. I'll give you just three more days." Was all the Monroe guy said before he wiggled out of Aprils grasp and stalked out the door. Moments passed in silence before the bar became noisy once again.
"Thank you ma'am, but you didn't have to intervene." The other man, Carl said.
"I'm afraid I had too. I couldn't afford to see either one of you get hurt."
"Sorry about that dear. My brother can't control his temper sometimes." Marge said, patting her brother on the head. April could definately see their similar traits. Both had light brown hair, brown eyes, and looked to be in their late 40s.
"No problem. If you don't mind, I have to get going."
"It's alright with me. You seem to be looking for something."
"Yeah. Thanks for the drink though." And she left to search for the nearest library.
....................
It had been a day since Ms. Conrads body was found. They had no leads. There was no sign of thr car descibed by neighbors, no fingerprints, and no murder weapon.
Thankfully, the news reporters hadn't heard all the full details, so the town wasn't in complete chaos....yet. It was only a matter of time before they figured out they had no leads on the person.
"Um...sir?" An officer asked warily, looking at William through the door.
"What is it? Did we find anything?"
"Well, no, not yet. Sir, we have a situation."
"What kind of situation?"
"Another murder. This time it was Annie Carter."
"Annie Carter?"
"Yes sir. She was a patient at the mental hospital. The cameras were busted in her room and, well, she was tortured, just like Ms. Conrad."
"Cause of death?" The officer walked in when he asked this and handed him a folder. It was filled with pictures of the murder.
"Phorensics say so far she must have been poisoned, leaving her dizzy and not able to fight back. The poison lasted well over an hour, giving the killer more than enough time to get some revenge."
"Same killer?"
"Most likely. Sir, do you think someone else is going to die?"
"I have no idea." The officer left and William sat there, thinking.
Annie Carter was Judy Jenson's patient. April had visited her a couple of days ago. William had a bad feeling that maybe, just maybe, the person who killed Ms. Conrad and Annie, would end up coming for April too.
