Videogaming has been one of the most opted hobbies for the past decade. According to a survey, 1 out of every 5 American teens is a gamer. So when something manages to gain this level of popularity, it's reasonable to question it's pros and cons.

A sport is any activity that engages your mind and/or physical body and enhances your capabilities. Here, we are to debate if gaming is actually a sport or not?

Let's view it from a physical point of view first, shall we?

Videogaming doesn't require much physical movement. All you have got to do, is to sit in one place and operate the controllers with your thumbs. So physically,  they cannot be considered very yielding; PHYSICALLY, we can't call it a sport.

However,

If we move to a more mental perspective, we would come to a realization that gaming, in small and appropriahe amounts, can strengthen your mental capabilities.

For one, the new video games that are coming out are extremely complex. They reach teach children how to make fast connections between what they see and what their hands perform. This improves hand-to-eye coordination.

Apart from that, the latest videogames are very precision based and require very minute and accurate movements. This allows one to think quickly and improves reflexes.

They also improve decision making skills as in video gaming, one is required to choose how to act which in turn has an impact on the quality of their gameplay.

As a matter of fact, gaming teaches you how to instantly access the abandoned knowledge at the back of your head and use it whenever you feel like there's a need.

Gamers tend to be more spontaneous, and better at resource management than non gamers. Their brain also works more effectively when it comes to problem solving skills.

Considering all the afore mentioned points, it is safe to say that gaming is a mental sport, but not a physical one.

In developed countries, it is already a sport. National and international tournaments are held and gamers compete. Winners also receive awards.
