Was it a dream or was he dead?

Tony opened his eyes to his bedroom door swinging back and forth.

He pulled the sheet spread off to lace up an old pair of Chuck Taylor’s.

If dead, he figured at least he had on nice summer-like clothes and not walking around naked, in case he’d bump into a family member. After all, he was going through puberty. The hardest times that a teenager had to endure. It was between ages thirteen to sixteen. Especially, living under a single parent’s household. The hardwood floors were old and made sounds when he’d walk on them throughout the upstairs and going down the stairway, too the downstairs living room and the dining room.

No longer a boy, a sixteen-year-old, he tiptoed his way around the house as quiet as he could, until he ended up in the kitchen. The basement connected. Bella was his cousin, he heard her yell for help to escape from the basement.

“Bella?” Tony pulled open the door halfway. She ran through and knocked him down to the tiled floor. She moved as if a ghost was after her. She shook out her hair. She wore it long and wavy. Her deep dark brown eyes said that they needed to find someplace to hide.

She gripped his arm. “I think we’re dead,” she said. Tony couldn’t get in a word. She yanked his wrist as they made a run for the front door. “It’s stuck. The door’s not opening.”

“What’s down there? Let me try." They both tugged on the door. Before she could respond, an eerie noise forced them to cover their ears. The sound pierced through them. The louder the noise—it paralyzed them. He showed no fear. Having no emotions made things worse. He reckoned, that he wasn’t dead, but possibly a sign of suffering from depression. Bella froze, then she disappeared. Things became clear that it was a dream. He woke up to an alarm clock and the smell of his mom making Saturday morning breakfast.
