It was a few months after high school graduation when two friends and I had been hanging out. It was about ten at night and my buddy’s Mom was already passed out asleep for the night. We had the upstairs to ourselves.

The room was fairly quiet, while we passed around a bottle of warm whiskey to kill our thoughts and the time.

Each of us checking our phones to see what time it was. And each time, we’d exhale, devastated.

Until, he knocked on the door then walked in. Our other bud had finally arrived. He had what we wanted. However he had been almost two hours late. That didn’t matter though. You can be two days late when you arrive with the kind of blow he had.

I couldn’t wait to get that sugary substance in my head. The way it surged up the straw, entering your nasal cavities, breaking down all walls to the brain. Straight to the dome.

     Pure bliss.

We had a glass plate with a mirror on it already set up ready to go. He chopped up four fat and weighty lines for each of us. Now I could hear everyone’s heartbeats pulsate. Who’s gonna go first?  Just then he glanced over at me and said my name.

     Oh yes.

This makes up for all the time I was picked last for sports in middle school. If they could see me now.

The lines were all about the same size. So I found what I thought was the biggest one and held the straw to the end of the it. Just as I was about to suck in, my Friend said something off in the distance which made me crack up. It was one of those laughs where you strongly exhaled first then burst into a hurricane of crackles. Laughing but also choking on air. All four fat lines were nothing but dust particles flying through the air. I saw what happened and could feel everyone’s eyes on me.

     Oh shit, I thought.
