The icy chill in the air burned like hot lava pouring down my throat as I gasped for another breath. Turn back, I kept thinking to myself, but I couldn't. I was too afraid of slowing my pace, at least that's what I told myself.

If I were being honest, the fear of him catching up kept me moving full steam ahead with a pace you'd typically see from and Olympic athlete.

He was still close. I could smell him, that stench invaded my nose and set my stomach turning. I can't stop now, just keep going, I quietly chanted. My lungs were sure to burst at this rate, and I began to feel a little clumsy with each passing stride. Just then, one wrong step sent my body flying across the path, I hit the ground hard with a loud thud.

I saw a blur of orange and red all around me, I blinked my eyes to clear my vision to get a better look. I was nearly buried in a pile of leaves. This could work, I thought to myself. I shimmied further down into the mud and threw the remaining leaves over the top of me. That's when I heard him come around the last turn.

I closed my eyes tight, suddenly every sound was muffled by the pounding of my heart. I couldn't see, or hear, and covered in all this mud and vegetation, I couldn't smell him either.

All I could do was lie there still, hoping he would pass and I could go back to where I buried the other bodies and finish the job before he returned, I knew for certain that he would be back.
