Whenever the sun sets, he could see a faint glimpse of her face, so transparent, yet still so solid, so fresh within his mind. He could remember those bright summer days where they sat on top of the hill, feeling the rays of the warm sun caressing their skin as they sat close to each other, talking and sharing jokes full of laughter until the sun finally began to descend. And every time she’d turn to face him, he would be mesmerized by her beautiful smile. A smile that shined brighter than the summer sun itself. Two young teenagers that were practically inseparable, the best of friends. But as for Dylan Evans, he had seen something more than just a friendship. He saw everything it could possibly be. What he saw in her, was something he considered to be... Magical. He hadn’t seen Alyssa in person for some time now, ever since she turned twenty-two years old and moved away down to California with her boyfriend, Richard Newman, who soon enough became her new fiance. They still remained as close as possible. Still chatting every single day, sharing information and details about their daily lives to one another through phone calls and texts, even sending presents and gifts back and forth to each other on special occasions. But now, after a few years, she was finally coming back home, after a week ago when her fiancé Richard, who worked as an officer for the L.A.P.D. was gunned down while he was off duty. He had been shot four times in the chest by a masked man, only a few houses away from their home in a robbery that had fatality gone bad. Alyssa couldn’t bear to stay in California any longer after losing him. She decided to come back home to New Jersey, Back to her family, back to her friends, back to him.Thinking back, Dylan could still remember that very day of which the pact was made. It was there, on that same hill, talking about the future and how many children they would want for themselves, and what marriage would possibly be like. Alyssa described her vision of her wedding in perfect detail, from the colors, to the songs, and to everyone who would attend. Dylan had always kept that image in the back of his mind for safe keeping. And after she described her dream wedding, she turned facing towards him, and her mouth stretched into that perfect smile that he loved so much.“Dylan, we should make a pact.” She said, her eyes staring directly into his.“What kind of pact?” He asked curiously.“Well when we get older, and if we’re not married and have a family of our own, and things just aren’t working out, let's make a pact that if so, we’ll just marry each other. We’re already gonna be best friends forever, we’ll know each other better than anyone else. So if we end up alone. We’ll just decide to marry each other.”Dylan’s eyes instantly lit up, and his heart began to speed rapidly with excitement.“Ok. I’m in.” He said calmly, trying to hide how excited he really felt.“Alright, the wedding still has to be exactly the way I’ve planned.”“Agreed,” Dylan responded with a smirk. She held her hand out, and Dylan grabbed a hold of it, and they shook on it. She would never know how much that day truly meant to him. To her, it was just a silly suggestion. But to Dylan, It was everything. His phone began to ring, snapping him out of his lucid daydream. He glanced down at the phone. And It was her, Alyssa.“Hello?” He answered anxiously.“Hey, Dylan it’s me. I just got back in town, was wondering if I could stop by and see you.”“Sure. Of course, I would love to. It’s been so long. And again, I’m sorry about what happened to Richard.”“Yes, its been a while. And yea thanks. I’m just...” she paused for a moment. “Where are you now?” She asked reluctantly.“I’m at the hilltop, just needed some alone time for a bit. But I’ll meet you at your family’s house in a few minutes.”“Ok. Thank you. I just have so much going on right now, I just need someone close to be around at the moment.”“Don’t worry, you know I’m always here for you. I’ll see you in a bit.” He said before hanging up and placing the phone back into his pocket. He then lifted up his shirt a bit and reached down along his waistline. And within his hand, he pulled out a black stainless steel pistol. And from out his left pocket, an all black woolen ski mask. He glanced at it one last time before stuffing the pistol inside of the mask and tying it up together. He got up off the grass, stood next to the small hole of dirt dug into the ground, picked up the shovel that laid beside it, tossed the items inside, and shoveled the hole closed. Then he placed a large stone on top of the plot of dirt, leaving a marker for its location. He looked up into the dimly lit sky once more as he inhaled and exhaled a long deep breath, then made his way down the back of the hill and to his car. He sat down, turned the key into the ignition, stared through the window shield at the road ahead of him, and his mouth slowly curled into a slight smile as he proceeded to drive off to go meet the love of his life. He knew now wasn’t the perfect time. But he knew that his time would come. The time for him and his dear Alyssa to one day be together as one. Yes, his time would come, and nothing or no one would ever stand in his way. And he was going to make sure of it.
