Nicola grasped tightly to the hand rail, looking down the dimly lit staircase. Every hair on her neck was on its end, every voice in her head screaming for her to turn, run. She had been frozen in place, watching it approach her. All was slowed, the unimaginable monster climbing the staircase, floorboards creaking underneath it. 

It took only seconds for it to reach her, wheezing heavily into her ear. "It was your fault," the monster hissed, a whisper in the wind, "accept Fate."
