Every night it was the same thing.  At 9:00 pm sharp, I put on my jacket and head to the park. The air seemed cooler at this time of night, causing every breath I take to make my lungs feel lighter.  The park would be open for another hour or so, although I didn't plan on staying even half that long.

But this wasn't a usual night.  I wish I would've known that.  I don't think I would've left my house, not after what I had seen at the park.

It started off very routine.  Several lights lighting the path made it easy to see in the dark.  The sound of the water fountain was always calming.   There were a few benches here and there.  They each had their own lamp illuminating them, as if they were performers on stage.

But suddenly, things weren't so usual.  There was another person, sitting alone in the spotlight of a lamppost.  It wasn't until I drew nearer that I realized who it was.  Charlie, the only person I had ever truly loved.

Charlie and I had never dated, but we used to hang out constantly.  Every time they greeted me with their chipper 'Hello' I fell more and more in love with them.  I had always hoped the feeling was mutual.

But now, in the eerie orange light cast by the lamp, I could tell something was wrong.  I could hear them sobbing.  Moving closer, I could see something in their hand.  I raced towards them, only to see my fear solidified.  It was a gun.  I ran as fast as I could.  "Charlie, no!" I screamed.

The gun went off with a loud, echoing bang.  It left my ears ringing for a few seconds.

As I reached Charlie, I could feel a pain in my heart.  My Charlie, the one I loved, gone.  Except they weren't..  "I'm sorry," they whispered, tears spilling down their face.  I was confused.  Everything was numb.  But then it clicked.  I knew the pain I had felt in my heart was real.  I look down, and sure enough, there is a small hole in my chest, spewing blood.  Charlie didn't kill themselves.  The air that had once made my lungs feel so light suddenly vanished.  I looked at Charlie, only to see the barrel of the gun looking back at me.

I think that before I heard that final shot, before it all went dark, I said to Charlie, "I love you too."
